Star Wars is probably my favorite series - movies, cartoons, books, etc. I love them all! I'm very excited about the upcoming movie and already have a movie date with my SIL to see it in IMAX with her and my sons. (If my brother and my husband are available, they'll come with us if they aren't working, but we are NOT going to miss it the first weekend!) Best first resource for Star Wars news is their official webpage - www.starwars.com/ - I use it frequently. And to get the ball rolling here's the first two trailers for the upcoming movie! And below that I have my spoiler listed - but it is hidden unless you want to see it! And my spoiler that I'm 90% sure is correct - Han Solo dies in the first film - if not him, Chewbacca. But pretty sure it's Han as Harrison only filmed for a short time.

Brave - I read that spoiler too. I figured something like that would happen or that the original three would have very small parts and that's it. I still hope it's not true. I know Ford wanted Solo to die in Return of the Jedi, but he's my favorite so I want him to live. lol

"Gugu Mbatha-Raw has reportedly signed up for a role in an upcoming Star Wars movie. The actress played Martha’s sister Tish Jones in the 2007 season of Doctor Who and is now best known for her roles in the 2013 movie Belle. Directed by Rian Johnson (Looper), Episode VIII will begin filming next year and is due in cinemas on 26 May 2017 following 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story..." link

"The Force is meaningless. And the Jedi are extinct." Or, at least, that's what the Empire tells itself. The final issue of Marvel's Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Shattered Empire is released today, closing off another prologue to December's movie set after the events of 1983's Return of the Jedi. As the four issue story draws to a close in the wake of the final trailer for The Force Awakens, here is a spoiler-y rundown of the things that fans might want to pay attention to. Shara Bey, the lead character in the series was hinted to be the mother of Oscar Isaac's Force Awakens character in the first issue of the series, and that connection was confirmed in the second, which established that Poe was already alive and in the background of events, being raised by Shara's father. By series' end, Shara and her husband Kes have both withdrawn from the conflict to start a new life … with a particular plant that might impact Poe's future, perhaps. link

"...he 30-second trailer for Battlefront's upcoming downloadable content "The Battle of Jakku" shows a battle between Rebellion and Imperial forces amid much carnage, including downed X-Wing and TIE fighters, while AT-AT and AT-ST Walkers shoot down remaining X-Wings. … And something big is falling right above everyone's heads. The video also reveals that the battle — described by Battlefront publishers EA as "the pivotal moment when the New Republic confronted key Imperial holdouts on a remote desert planet" — takes place 29 years before The Force Awakens, offering the first official identification of the time frame for the new movie. "The Battle of Jakku" will be available Dec. 1 for those who preordered Star Wars Battlefront (which is released Nov. 17 on PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One), with general release following a week later. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released Dec. 18..."

"...Front and center to the entire trailer is Daisy Ridley’s Rey, with BB-8 along for the ride. “I know all about waiting … for my family,” she tells BB-8 as the two walk through the dessert. But perhaps more surprising than the additional footage of Rey on her search is who appears with her in one particular moment. As seen above, Kylo Ren threatens Rey at one point with his crossguard lightsaber. Watch the trailer below to see a surprising amount of new scenes from the film. C-3PO and Leia appear together in one scene (as well as Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron, who appears standing in the background behind 3PO), Finn and Rey introduce themselves to each other, more ground and aeriel combat is shown off, and, thankfully, there is plenty of BB-8. And though the new trailer may present Rey with a new threat to her life, it ends on a note of new hope for what’s to come..." link

"The Han Solo movie has auditioned over 2,500 actors including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Dave Franco & Chandler Riggs According to Heat Vision, casting on Lucasfilm’s Han Solo movie is kicking into high gear. With The LEGO Movie helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller directing the still-untitled Star Wars Anthology film, they’ve brought on their casting director Jeanne McCarthy (the 21 Jump Street films) to cast a wide net (over 2,500 actors seen so far) for filling Harrison Ford’s iconic role. Despite Kathleen Kennedy saying the character would be in his “high teens, low 20s,” they’ve auditioned high-profile names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Avengers: Age of Ultron, age 25), Miles Teller (Fantastic Four, age 28), Hunter Parish (“Weeds,” age 28), Dave Franco (21 Jump Street, age 30) and Rami Malek (“Mr. Robot,” age 34). Young thesps that have either read or sent in a tape who fall more into the range Kennedy identified are Chandler Riggs (“The Walking Dead,” age 16), Leo Howard (“Kickin’ It,” age 18), Nick Robinson (Jurassic World, age 20), Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars, age 21), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction, age 23), Logan Lerman (Fury, age 23), Landon Liboiron (“Hemlock Grove,” age 23) and Tony Oller (The Purge, age 24). Keep in mind that the prequel/spin-off doesn’t begin shooting until January 2017, so that gives some of the younger candidates an extra year to age into the character and more time for Lord & Miller to make a decision. Yet other names under consideration include Colton Haynes (“Teen Wolf,” “Arrow,” age 27) and Max Thieriot (“Bates Motel,” age 27) as well as English actors Ed Westwick (“Gossip Girl,” age 28), Tom Felton (the “Harry Potter” films, age 28) and Joshua Sasse (“Galavant,” age 27). There is no mention of an audition by fan-favorite Anthony Ingruber, whose dead-ringer looks led to him playing a younger version of Harrison Ford’s character in Age of Adeline..." link

I'm sure he must be interested in other roles and projects despite his long-term committment to TWD. Rami Malek (Mr Robot and other great work) also auditioned for the role. The role reminds me of the years-long search for the "right" Scarlett O'Hara David O. Selznick did for Gone With The Wind in 1937-39 IIRC. link

"We know the Star Wars universe is home to some of the most iconic and beloved droids in cinematic history, but shouldn’t it big enough to be home to two of the funniest robots ever too? I mean, would it have killed J.J. Abrams to cast Tom Servo and Crow from Mystery Science Theater 3000 in The Force Awakens? Especially after the great auditions they gave? During the auditions, proud union member Tom Servo and “non-union” Crow T. Robot were both offended that they were expected to only read for the part of BB-8. (I think Tom would have made a wonderful Kylo Ren myself.) While nobody likes to be typecast, even a robot, it’s tough to deny how good they both were at “beeping.” Although, as Tom Servo pointed out, “You know we don’t all beep. I’ve actually never met a bot that beeped.” As a bonus, I think Crow may have given the greatest argument of all time for C-3PO being vastly superior to R2-D2..." abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/star-wars-force-awakens-critics/story?id=35796523 The reviews are in for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and by the looks of things, it's going to be a happy weekend for fans of a galaxy far, far away.
Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times and USA Today have all printed what they think of J.J. Abrams' take on the iconic franchise (ABC News is a subsidiary of Disney and will not be reviewing the movie). **** Good reviews so far - to be fair, there is one that is meh. I'm going Saturday morning - my grandson's orthodontist has rented a theater for all his patron's and one guest each.

www.hitfix.com/motion-captured/review-jj-abrams-breathes-new-life-into-star-wars-with-the-force-awakens"HitFix Review: JJ Abrams breathes new life into 'Star Wars' with 'The Force Awakens'
At one point before the premiere last night, I heard an ardent fan say that it is impossible to review a movie like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." I understand what he means, particularly because he's coming to it as a fan first and foremost, but that's obviously not true. While I am a first-generation "Star Wars" freak, chemically transformed by the experience of seeing the first film in 1977, I am also a working film critic, and at heart, "The Force Awakens" is indeed "just" a movie.
It's a very good movie, I'd say, and should entertain audiences both deeply and casually invested in the ongoing saga of the Skywalker family. Made with a profound sense of passion and respect by an entire generation of filmmakers and performers who were influenced by the original films, this is a deeply affectionate film, and that affection, that honestly felt love, is what is going to make all the difference for viewers.
From the very first line of the film's opening crawl, it is apparent that JJ Abrams, Michael Arndt, and Lawrence Kasdan have pushed the series back onto the right track, and there is an urgency to the story that is propelled by a very simple mystery: Luke Skywalker has vanished. From that simple idea, the film builds an adventure that both introduces us to an entire new cast of characters and re-unites us with plenty of old friends. There is a breathlessness to the film, but it's not frantic. One of the things Abrams gets right is remembering that without quiet moments, none of the frenetic activity is terribly interesting."

I toyed with the idea for a while, but in looking at the trailer several times I decided no. But it seemed like a great plot twist.

Can I just offer a blanket "LIKE" to every post that has been made in this thread and every post that will be made. I cannot wait to see this movie. I'm of the original generation who saw the magic of the 1977 glorious spectacle in the theater. I know I won't be in as much "awe" as back in '77 but I'm planning on a big "Wow"! **** These are movie critic reviews of the '77 movie. www.ew.com/article/2015/12/17/original-star-wars-reviewsI'm so glad this article was done by EW. I actually planned to put together a post with some of these reviews. Here is a snippet: Gene Siskel, The Chicago Tribune: “Star Wars is not a great movie in that it describes the human condition. It simply is a fun picture that will appeal to those who enjoy Buck Rogers-style adventures. What places it a sizable cut about the routine is its spectacular visual effects, the best since Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 … Star Wars is a battle between good and evil. The bad guys (led by Peter Cushing and an assistant who looks like a black vinyl-coated frog) control the universe with their dreaded Death Star.”
