Carol Comes Out Of Retirement In The Latest Clip From ‘The Walking Dead’
Do you miss Carol? I do. I miss pragmatic, cutthroat, makes tough choices, “eat your cookies or I’ll single-handedly destroy everything you love” Carol. But she’s been missing on The Walking Dead for a while now. I’ve suggested before that the show hit Melissa McBride’s character with the Nerf bat specifically to sideline her from the first round of skirmishes with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). After all, what chance does a monologuing gym coach have against a woman who destroyed a settlement of cannibals without breaking a sweat?
But, based on the trailer above for the upcoming episode “Bury Me Here,” Carol is back with a vengeance. In the clip, the facade of the demure housewife is once again replaced with Carol’s true form: Hulked Out Mama Bear. No zombie will stand between her and finding Morgan (Lennie James). To what ends isn’t revealed, but having her use the “One Way” sign to easily dispatch a small herd of walkers is a nice touch. There’s only ‘one way’ to deal with people like the Saviors: The Carolocracy.
What could cause this change in demeanor? My guess is Daryl (Norman Reedus) finally spilled the beans on what really went down when the Group met the Saviors. Carol even said herself in “New Best Friends” that she would go down a dark path of murder should it ever come to light that more people she cared about had been hurt, to say nothing of being brutally murdered. Oftentimes, The Walking Dead episode names have layered meanings. Perhaps someone will die in “Bury Me Here,” but I’d bet a shiny bottle cap the title alludes to Carol finally putting her solitary, pacifist life to rest.
Carol is dead. Long live Carol.

Thanks for posting this Meggo358 - Carol's return to herself from sitting in the creepy house, "here but not here" is going to be a welcome sight for many general viewers and fans.

What an idiotic title for an article? honestly I don't think there's anything negative meant by it. Simply that she's "returning to work" : )

The title doesn't bother me. I love that Carol is getting attention and that the writer is excited for this part of her story to be over (as I think we all are).

Simply that she's "returning to work" : ) In this fandom, even a comment by YNB about how NR portrayed Daryl, with no mention of Carol, can apparently be taken as an affront. Frankly, I'll find it a little hypocritical if those who jumped on her defend the title of the article or simply ignore it. But, I can see precisely that happening...

If the haters go in the comments and if there will be only haters, calling Carol or Melissa some dumb things they will look like fools in their environment of idiots

I guess that makes me a hypocrite then. Sheesh.

That's the thing, weeds_or_wildflowers . Those who want to interpret things in an ageist way will do so. The problem, therefore, doesn't lie with those whose words are being used, but were never intended, in a negative way; it's with the people using them to support their ageist misogyny. At least in this case, one could make an argument that something other than retirement, something that is typically associated with older people, might have been used... and the words being used actually relate to Carol. That said, I personally don't take great issue here because the author likely, with no thought to age, just viewed "retirement" as the easiest way to describe the state of being done with a "position".

weeds_or_wildflowers -- I meant no criticism of your questioning of the word. That's the thing with words... they don't always translate to mean one very specific thing, so people can ascribe their own meaning based on their own values, biases, agendas... particularly when they're functioning in a language they're fully fluent in.

Pfft! Some editor or the writer made the title so more people would click on it and bring the site more ad revenue and higher stats. Cheap gimmick but very common.

If we put Carol at MMB's (and my) age, retirement is not completely out of the range for the lucky few. Of course, I may never retire, and who knows if anyone will now that we will probably lose our health insurance and Social Security, but while 51 isn't retirement age, it's close to early retirement for some. That said, Carol could be several years younger than MMB. But anyone who thinks that Daryl is 25 or even 35 is fully delusional. It's most plausible that any age difference between Daryl and Carol is the same or less that that of NR and MMB. Most of the ageists do seem to be in the "Daryl is 25" group. (rofl)

My issue is actually with the torrent of Tumblr... whatever that was-in... over YNB's words, as well as a few to me particularly harsh, unreasonable tweets, because I personally think that jumping to make her responsible for anyone's taking a comment about Daryl's portrayal and extrapolating that such that they can make ageist remarks about MMB is unfair. The person making the giant leap to the ageist comment is the one responsible. Here, we have a word used specifically about Carol, and it's a word that many could very readily associate with older age. My point really was just that there's a disconnect if this word and its initial user aren't treated as problematic despite how "retirement" can be interpreted by those wanting to interpret it that way when words that related to NR's portrayal of Daryl, not to Carol's age at all, and their user are.

You mean that if this were pre-ZA, Daryl wouldn't just be finishing his taxidermy apprenticeship while Carol collected old age benefits?? He has dark hair except in his beard! And, Carol's is grey! Based on that and that alone, they're obviously decades apart in age! *plucks grey hairs out of 30-something head so as to try to make statement not absurd*

I can see where you're coming from. I think there can be some over-defensiveness when it comes to NR's statements. There is a tendency to quote the ABC shippers instead of his original words. ABC shippers (including the one who shall not be named) like to cherry-pick through his comments and twist the words to promote their POV. A lot of what NR has said over the years, is fairly innocuous, but because of the interpretations and the way it gets relayed by some ABC shippers in a game of "Tumblr telephone", NR gets unfairly tagged with being "anti-Caryl' when we really don't know his opinions and anyway it doesn't matter. As for YNB, I'm not a fan, but I also don't think she's really relevant either. She clarified her words, and I think that was fine. Now her claims about "starting the Caryl ship" LMAO and

I did read once (but don't have the source) that the writers considered having Daryl and Carol know each other in high school. Canon says that Merle was in juvie when Daryl got lost in the woods and he said something about being "not much younger than Sophia". That gives us some clues but some choose to ignore.

The WS London photos show how much they color both NR & JDM for the show IMO. Any other hair, I do not want to know, frankly, (and yes that is a joke of sorts, but I really do not want to know)

And I am at retirement age and discriminated against because of my age at my current workplace, so I am VERY sensitive to age crap. I thought it was meaning Carol had retired from fighting and now is back.
