Talk about Negan here.
(I couldn't think of a topic name that wasn't completely perverted.)

This is my hope for Negan. I want him to be ruthless, but not in the Governor kind of way but more like Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal. Intelligent, funny, witty, and rarely over the top. Someone who under different circumstance, you'd buy him a drink and shoot the shit with for the night. BUT the moment you get too comfortable will be your last moment on earth. I don't care what he's like in the comic, this is the version I want to see.

I LOVE Negan. He's my favourite fictional character in any medium. As a huge Negan fan and hater of the TV version of the Governor, I hope they keep him much closer to the source material. I'm pretty certain they will. He's everything you could possibly want all in one character. I don't see any real way they can improve him, so I'd rather they not try. I expect and even want them to change some scenes and circumstances. I don't want it too predictable, but keep his personality what it should be.

blackjack What did you think of JDM in the role? Do you think he did Negan justice?

They did an excellent job with casting JDM. I hope he gets a little bit of bulk back. Negan's something of a powerhouse. I'm thrilled with JDM in the part. He has that certain something, almost a charisma about him. He's going to make a great Negan.

It's his charisma that has me intrigued, something I think the Guv'nor lacked. What I'm worried about is how the writers will handle his backstory or bottle episodes, since I wasn't a fan of the episodes devoted to Phillip Blake.

I absolutely hated those. I liked the Governor all through season 3. Those episodes at the beginning of season 4 actually ruined him for me.
Because of those, I don't trust them not to ruin things with some kind of lame or ridiculous and unneeded backstory type of episode. I just want my happy, smiling, charismatic, social, friendly, hilarious, terrifying, and gleefully homicidal psychopath. I don't want them to try to explain him. I don't think there is any way to really explain him.

I like JDM as actor. He can act and is hot but I think I will get bored by Negan in no time. Also I thought his costume looked like something a villain from a 80's movie would wear.

I'm just not buying Negan, and to me it's a combination of the character's dialogue and his appearance. I'm not getting the charm or the wit and I don;t think he is physically intimidating at all.
I thought he was going to be a seductive villain, one who could draw you in in spite of the fact that he'll violently kill you or your loved ones. He seems more like a caricature of what he was intended to be. I know it's early, but he's had so much screen time already and my first opinion is already formed; if there isn't substantially more to him then it's going to be tough for me to keep engaged.

I think I'd find Negan more intimidating if JDM would disappear from the press for a while. All the usual LA billboards for the show were all Negan this year I'm told, and I'm Negan'd out like a pumpkin spice Latte fan in December.

After watching the premiere, I'm not that impressed by JDM. I have seen him in other roles like Edward Blake in The Watchmen. He was one of the best things in that bad movie. But he isn't clicking for me as Negan. It could be the non-stop monologue's or that he looks ridiculous with that red scarf & leather. Plus Negan isn't physically frightening which is down to JDM being thin at the moment.
Steven ogg probably would have made a better Negan in my opinion. But the show wanted someone who very attractive in the role. To tap in to the market of females / males who love the villainous character.

starlight I agree about Steven Ogg in the role of Negan. I was pulling for Chris Meloni. I am not terribly familiar with JDM,and after this, I don't think I will ever be lol

I have to admit I am not really happy with the way Negan is being played. I'm a comic reader and Negan is one of those love to hate characters for me, but he never bored me or made me roll my eyes. I also ADORE JDM and think he is a really good actor but.. I guess my biggest bitch is they took the ultimate bad guy, the worst of the worst, have a talented actor play him and yet so far he has been nothing but a caricature. All he's missing is a mustache to twirl and a evil laugh to be every stereotypical 1930's bad guy. Maybe I'm just not appreciating the character or had too high of expectations, but this comic reader is far from impressed

Negan's not doing it for me. I don't hate him. I don't love to hate him. I definitely don't like him. I just want him off my screen kinda like any character I think is being paid too much attention at the expense of TF. And his monologue's sound too much like Yosemite Sam's.

I am not thrilled with him. He seems too much of a caricature.. just swagger and intimidation and no heart. What does he care about? I want to know. Interesting how he humanizes Lucille. I would like to see more about that. What is his relationship with that bat?
I think the real problem for me is he as touted too much in the media, as was JDM. Maybe if they had been more secretive it would play better for me.

Once again TWD self-sabotages with the fandom but not the general audience members. There are more of them than us, sadly but ratings will be king this season. With 7.04 looking ike another "ripped straight from the comic as filler for your enjoyment" episode, I am not feeling very hopeful. I'm so eager to get to 7.05 and follow up with Maggie and Sasha.

Even without the overexposure (and even that term seems like an understatement), I don't think this rendition of Negan would be working. I agree with the impression of a moustache-twirling caricature. JDM's not bringing any realism to him at all. Acknowledging that the dialogue is stilted, his delivery is doing nothing to improve the situation. Is JDM simply having too much fun? And, is that manifesting as absurdity, rather than believable narcissism and lack of empathy? I'm not sure, but, as bad as dialogue and associated monologues were for characters like Gareth and Joe, they still managed not to be this bad. Heck, even alpha wolf was better than this. I actually believed *the character* when he said he'd kill the community's children if given the chance, as opposed to believing, in Negan's case, that the writers will have him kill people... if that makes sense? No fear is generated by the performance in ep 3 especially; I just know characters are in danger from Negan because the writers want a body count to make him the speshul snowflake villain he's supposed to be.

Exactly. One problem is that JDM just seems to be having too much fun playing the character. I don't see Negan in there....or if I do he just isn't fleshed out enough. I would like to see some sort of nuance in his expressions. He is either angry or smirking.

It's like JDM has a go big or go home mentality with Negan, and I mean that in the worst way possible. Anthony Hopkins did an interview for Silence of the Lambs and told how (against the director's initial instruction who wanted him to act just as crazy as his cell mates) he fought to play Lecter as a calm polite man. He wanted the audience's first glimpse of him to be shocking in that he was nothing like they were told he would to be - so that when he did strike with his words or actions it would be terrifying. Something tells me JDM never saw this interview.

Negan is killing me. He is just too loud both verbally and in his body language and non-verbal communication. The constant talking and ridiculous dialogue is making me tune him out (Watch next week to see Negan continue his oppression of Rick&Co. by making them sit criss-cross applesauce!) I have Negan fatigue.

Negan would work better in small doses. But the show is shoving him down the fans/ GA throats, expecting them to accept and love the character. Because that's how the comic fans reacted to Negan antics in the comics. And that's the problem, TV is a completely different environment to the comics. So if something worked in the comics, there is a good chance it won't work on the screen.

Something tells me JDM never saw this interview. I totally agree here! Now, I have to admit that I have laughed out lout at a number of things he's said just because they're funny as hell, but the freakin long winded dialogue that he spews every time he on screen needs to be cut back at least 75%! We could honest to God do with about a fourth of what he's currently dishing out in every scene he's in! Subtlety and and "air of mystery" go a long way with villians imo, the less they say and the less emotion that's shown, exactly the way Anthony Hopkins chose to approach his role of Hannibal Lecter, always makes them creepier and more threatening, mostly because, and this is just my thought, because they're not constantly letting you know what they're thinking and what they're gonna do to you..at length!! Second issue I have, he has absolutely no regard for the "personal space bubble" that most people like others to respect! I know he doesn't give half a shit but does he seriously always have to be one inch from Rick's face (or anybody else he's addressing) when he's talking to them!? All I know is I hope the saviors have plundered plenty of tic tacs for him from all these other communities! While I do think that JDM is doing a pretty great job with the role for what it is, I do think that there may have been a couple of other actors considered that just by personality alone might have "embodied" Negan a little more effectively (someone mentioned Chris Meloni and I think that would have been spot on imo). Negan does deliver some seriously funny lines here and there, but he is honestly just a malicious, maniacal bully with a hard on for power and control over anyone who will submit to him through threats and by "making an example" of those who dare to test just how serious he is about maintaining that control. I get that he's supposed to be this larger than life, super "charismatic" (getting so sick of that terminology btw!) figure and everybody has been waiting on his ass to show up for a long time now, but now that he's finally here, I just wish he'd dial it back and shut his damn pie hole for just a minute?! Silence can be much more menacing, so shut the hell up and leave us guessing for a bit dude?

Looking at a group of gif sets from Service, I realized the back tilt thing Negan does is irritating as fuck. It reminds me of Rick's head tilt of doom. The only people I see do that in rl are people with bad backs. It really bugs me. The monologues work ok in the comics but on the show they are too much. Many of his lines that are supposed to come across as "funny" or "snarky" fall flat most of the time. as several reviewers have pointed out, what made dwight and Negan both interesting in the comics was the mystery surrounding them. You got their stories over a period of time, on the show we are getting spoon fed information. Too much too soon to make it interesting or to build drama.

I think it's funny how most of us worried how they'd pull off King Ezekiel with his over-the-top medieval shtick, but when he dropped the act with Carol he became relataeble. I'm still waiting for Negan to drop the act. Oh, and someone called him the Andrew Dice Clay of the ZA and now I can't unsee it.

Several GA acquaintances don't like Negan because he's "too good looking" to be a villain. Apparently all villains must look like Freddy Krueger in order to be convincing villains.
