One of my favorite series of novels is commonly called "The Jack Reacher's" by Lee Child. I read 61 Hours and was immediately hooked. So I read all 20 in order. Jack Reacher is a former Major in the United States Army Military Police Corps, Reacher quit at age 36, and roams the United States taking odd jobs and investigating suspicious and frequently dangerous situations. He travels light - toothbrush, toothpaste, and comb. He throws his clothes away and buys new. He never carts around baggage. Lee Child puts Reacher in some kind of harm's way in every novel. The prose is spare - the plot is well done - every book keeps my attention. Just read the most recent Make Me. If you like tense taut thrillers, try reading the first one. www.bookseriesinorder.com/jack-reacher/Skip the movie - Tom Cruise is NOT Jack Reacher. Sadly I see Cruise will be filming Never Go Back Jack Reacher 2 Reacher is 6'5" and built like a Mack Truck.

The Martian by Andy Weir. I've read about 10 new books so far this year and that one is by far my favorite. The movie is in theaters now, I'd recommend watching that first (it's amazing) then reading the book so you can see what they left out.

@dark sister, I agree The Martian was a enthralling read. One that I didn't want to finish.
What are some of the others you have read?

I think everyone should read the Dune novels by Frank Herbert. Water is used as a metaphor for oil & Game of Thrones fans will enjoy the Dune universe's different species of people, the politics of the Empire plus the various Royal families including the Atreides, Harkonen, plus the order of Bene Gesserit women, the human-computer type thinkers ( Mentats) etc.
