Steven Moffat, showrunner for Doctor Who, has weighed on on the issue of why the Doctor traded in his iconic sonic screwdriver for a pair of sunglasses. Fans have not been happy over the choice to lose the screwdriver, an important iconic prop for every doctor since it first appeared.
