Steven Moffat, showrunner for Doctor Who, has weighed on on the issue of why the Doctor traded in his iconic sonic screwdriver for a pair of sunglasses. Fans have not been happy over the choice to lose the screwdriver, an important iconic prop for every doctor since it first appeared. "...Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has a message for fans who aren’t sold on the Doctor’s new gadget: “Sometimes, you actually have to embrace the heresy.” When the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) traded his sonic screwdriver for sonic sunglasses in the second half of the season 9 premiere, not all fans were ready to embrace “wearable technology.” The screwdriver has been a signature tool in the Doctor’s arsenal since the late 1960s — but in a video shared by BBC One’s YouTube account, Moffat argues that the sunglasses are being true to the history of the long-running series... ...“I’m sure the screwdriver will show up again someday.”
