When you've outstripped the competition to become the biggest show on television, the only thing left to do is push forward and strive to break your own records. Or at least, that's what The Walking Dead will be hoping to achieve when it returns with Season 8 — and its 100th episode — on October 22. For years now, #TheWalkingDead has left other shows in its dust as it dominates the ratings charts. The series' seventh season was the number one ranked show with viewers ages 18 - 49, and it was the third most watched series overall — with the cable series only being beaten out by network shows, The Big Bang Theory and NCIS. moviepilot.com/posts/4356854/amp

I predict the show will get one of its lowest ratings for a premiere since SG took over. They only managed to get 11.31 for the season 7 final compared to GOT who got 16.5 for their final. I think the show will be lucky to get 12-13 million for 8.1. Despite all the obvious efforts to promote the show and rebrand this season, I think you are right. I don't think the show will ever regain the viewership it had at its height no matter how good it might get.

I'm sure by most standards the premier numbers will be enviable, but I agree with Starlight that the show isn't going to be breaking any records moving forward. They just can't regain the steam they've steadily lost over the past few seasons (especially last season) I wouldn't be surprised if the show finally dips below 10M on a regular basis. I actually wouldn't be surprised if we see 8 or 9M (which is still great)

I think 8.1 will get the lowest ratings for a season premiere in the history of twd.I hope for it. There were more than enough chances to improve and change over the years, keep it fresh and interesting for the audience.Tptb did the opposite. They did not listen to criticism and made excuses for everything time and again. There ARE much better shows on tv right now. These deserve the praise and the ratings.Look at GOT.This is a hell of an innovative show, creating buzz and excitement wherever I look.Trying to be objective, why go back to twd if you can have more thrill and quality? I predict twd will tank around 8-9 mio.viewers from 8.2. forward.

Maybe I am wrong. I have nothing against a surprise, because the facts are actually really sad.
