The Defenders Early Reviews from Screen Rant: Though it’s not set to debut until next month, early reviews for Marvel and Netflix’s superhero team-up miniseries the Defenders are already starting to drop, and so far critics are mostly on board with the direction of the show. Defenders will mark the first time protagonists from Netflix’s solo Marvel shows (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist) will all share the screen together and will serve as Marvel’s small screen counterpoint to their big screen team-up film series The Avengers. Naturally, this means that Marvel and Netflix have a lot riding on Defenders, which, thanks to vital information revealed in the newest trailer, will seemingly focus on the team’s fight with The Hand and their possible leader Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver) as well as a newly resurrected Elektra. Jon Bernthal’s Punisher will also be appearing in the show ahead of the debut of his own solo series, though it’s still unknown how large of a role his character will play. With the review embargo on Defenders lifting today, several sites have already started posting reviews for the first four episodes (of eight) of the show. You can check out spoiler-free excerpts from various websites below. If you thought Defenders would be a culminating chapter to the other Netflix Marvel series so far, think again. So far it feels like another prelude, and it makes one wonder if we’ll ever get to the main event. Empire – Dan Jolin Even so, there is enough joy in watching the sparks fly as these four alpha characters finally collide to make you feel The Defenders might just have been worth the wait. It’s a long-anticipated crossover series that delivers some engaging character clashes, but which fails — in the first half at least — to up the ante story-wise. We got this covered---Robert Yaniz, Jr While the show starts as something of a slow burn, once the heroes come together, it more than lives up to the promise fans have been clamoring to see realized. It may not be the strongest Marvel Netflix series thus far (that would be a toss-up between Daredevil and Jessica Jones), but The Defenders splits the differences between its leads, creating something that even casual fans of these shows shouldn’t miss. It sounds like an insult to say that The Defenders is exactly what you thought it would be, but it isn’t. It’s a show that’s very aware of the expectations put upon it and the problems encountered by the other Marvel Netflix shows, and it knows how to best utilize its cast and its time. In other words, it’s great. Decider – Brett White The Defenders feels like a true hybrid, the sum being impossibly more enthralling than its charismatic parts. You can practically see the sparks flying as soon as these rock solid characters strike against each other. You see just how good each performer is in their respective role once they’re put in context of the other three. ComingSoon – Jenna Busch For fans, this is definitely worth a watch, though getting to the actual story might be frustrating for some. When the team up finally does happen, it’s pretty satisfying. If you haven’t seen all the other series, fear not. A lot of time is spent explaining. Hopefully we can let that go in the second half. While most of these reviews are definitely leaning toward the positive side, they all seem to share one complaint: pacing. This has certainly been a common complaint among all of the other Marvel/Netflix solo shows from critics and fans, but with a leaner eight episodes (compared to the thirteen episodes the solo shows utilized) it’s a little surprising that Defender seems to fall into the same narrative trap. Still, after the overwhelmingly negative critical reception to Iron Fist earlier this year, mostly positive reviews for Defenders is a huge step in the right direction for Marvel. In fact, most reviews seem more positive toward Iron Fist’s Danny Rand character (Finn Jones) than they did in his respective solo outing. With a second season confirmed for Iron Fist, this is certainly a step in the right direction for the Rand character as well. screenrant.com/the-defenders-early-reviews-marvel-netflix-crossover/

I'm glad to here it's positive so far. With how bad Iron Fist and Jessica Jones were, I was a bit worried.

The Defenders is available to stream today Let's use spoiler tags for a week when discussing the show since we don't all stream at the same pace. I'd also suggest specifying which ep you're about to spoil in case someone has seen that, but just hasn't finished the season but if you don't want to that's fine.

Spoilers for episodes 1-3. I'm liking it so far. It does feel slow at parts like most Marvel Netflix shows do, but I liked how they checked in with each hero separately and I felt like they came together in an organic way. Danny is definitely better used under this show runner than he was in Iron Fist, and they seem to carefully filming around Ritter's lack of believable fighting so that's a plus. I was happy personally to see Matt working again, as jobs in this universe is always something that bothered me. lol. The fight at the end of episode 3 was awesome.

Finally done! So spoilers for all episodes I'm so easily pleased with Netflix Marvel stuff sometimes. Everybody together, the crossovers, the simple interaction of people coming together makes me happy. Like, everybody was in it! I haven't watched Iron Fist so I was unsure if that would be an issue for me with caring about Danny, but it didn't seem to hinder any enjoyment for me.
I loved the Trish and Karen talk about Jessica and Matt being "a real friend", because I think she needed to hear that. As with Season 2 of Daredevil, it bothered me they weren't involved when I think they should be, and that lack of knowledge always makes them seem like they're just getting in the way and I hate that.
I still cannot like Elektra. Every time I get close she just pisses me off again. When she went to Matt's apartment I was totally rooting for her. I didn't even mind when it seemed like she'd been lost to The Black Sky again, but Elektra being the 'bad one' just...I have little interest. She just always seem so selfish and compromised and it's so obvious compared to everybody else. I get that's the point, that she's not simple, that her and Matt fundamentally can't work, but I just don't care that much.
Why was there no 'Claire, you know Matt?' conversation with Luke? Everybody else got one... And then the comment to Foggy at the end about their mutual friend, it was like she didn't even know that Luke knew he was Matt... I'm guessing I must have missed something, maybe.
Sigourney Weaver being awesome as always.
The blend of each show styling I thought was done very well the first few episodes.
I admit I was really looking for a Frank mention in that first Matt and Karen scene and I'm curious about any potential crossover about Matt's fate being in Punisher. Like, even through where Karen's at in mentality.
I thought they handled the Luke and Jessica relationship pretty well. I didn't think it would get that much. I don't know if that's in part why I was so aware of no Matt and Claire actually, because the first relationships roots were totally explored.

I read spoilers because I have zero self control, and though I'm not at this point in the series. I have a complaint No major plot points are spoiled, this is about a character interaction I think it's absolute bullshit Claire and Matt don't have more scenes. It's like they can't allow that because they're still trying to sell Matt/Karen as a couple, even though they have no chemistry. But it's getting ridiculous. My biggest complaint about Claire in Iron Fist was how she never mentioned Matt to Danny and Colleen despite the fact that she knew Matt dealt with The Hand, and they were going after The Hand. Why not tell them? Why are they trying so hard to keep them apart?

Why not tell them? Why are they trying so hard to keep them apart? This was so weird to me! I really don't get it? I'm not convinced it's just the Karen thing because Luke and Jessica is so there even though there's Luke and Claire. And Matt and Claire I don't think would be hinting much - not as much as Luke and Jessica does at some points especially and her commitment to Luke is clearly there. They would just be shown as friends who have gone through something. I totally don't get it. That very last scene from Claire (I won't actually say it cuz you haven't seen it) but it felt like I had either really missed something or Luke and Claire genuinely didn't know they both about Matt, like she was still keeping his secret.

Oh! Oh! The very familiar lines I thought were amusing. "Not today" and "You know nothing." I mean come on! hahaha

I saw episode 6 last night, and I'll probably finish the series tonight. Alexandra dying already feels like kind of a waste after she was hyped up so much. Does anyone else not buy Luke Cage's "I don't believe in that mystic stuff." I'm sorry but you live in a world where aliens attacked New York and people like Thor and Wanda Maximoff exist. Is a dragon really that hard to imagine?

On a rewatch. I think the first time they all fall down from Danny's Iron Fist had some foreshadowing in it. Stick is the only one of them that doesn't get back up, and the next time they're all knocked down he's the only one who will never get back up again.
Also, Matt totally plays the Daredevil theme song on the piano.

Finished it. Pretty good overall but it had its flaws.
I'm a forever bitter Clairedevill shipper.
Man the editing/directing in episode 7 was awful.

I'm on episode 5. Enjoying it but not loving it. Only 8 episodes and I feel like it is just starting. I'm not clicking on the spoilers and am curious to see where it goes. 1 of my kids watched it and said it was good not great. 2 coworkers said the same and it sounds like you all thought the same. Always interesting when it appears to be a consensus!
I will say Sigourney Weaver is fantastic in this and for a woman who clearly hasn't had any work done at 67 looks great.

Well like I said, I'm easily pleased with some Marvel stuff. I like character interaction, simple character interaction. Season 2 of the Walking Dead is prolly still my favourite season. So The Defenders seriously ticks that for me. Karen and Trish being in the same room together is something I've wanted forever. Someone commented to me that "nothing happens" in the Defenders and I have trouble understanding that, understanding what it is people really want from a story. It literally happens over a space of a few days, it's a continuation and conclusion of previous, multiple strands, it's characters we haven't seen in a long time - it's all characters we've like, ever seen in each strand, people die, there's a bad guy and a motive and a fight back from the good guy. So what is it people actually want? What needs to happen that would qualify "something happening"? I don't get it. I think it did a really good job of balancing each character and strand, and their styling. Especially in length of season.

I still have some complaints about how everything was handled but over all it was good enough. If anything, Defenders makes me want to give Jessica Jones season 2 a try. I wasn't going to because I was so disappointed with season one, but I will now. I'm interested in seeing where Luke Cage and Daredevil go after this as well.

I haven't been following the Jessica Jones season 2 filming but I got the impression from Defenders that Luke Cage is going to be relevant in Season 2. I mean, he obviously should be given source material but because I have no idea how long the runs of the shows are going to be (do you know? Like, how many seasons they could go on for, I mean) I've wondered how comic they're going to go. Like, maybe the Jessica and Luke stuff in The Defenders was their homage to the comics.

I don't think there's set seasons. I do expect the heroes to stay separate, at least for a bit. I think Luke and Danny could eventually form one show and be "Heroes For Hire" like the comics but Matt and Jessica I bet always stay separate.
