Forbes' Paul Tassi succinctly expresses something I've been feeling about both shows at this point in time. It's not a criticism per se, more of an observational truth.

"As Fear the Walking Dead continues its surprising season three renaissance tonight, I wanted to explore a bit why the show is starting to connect with me while The Walking Dead is losing my attention after seven seasons. Some of it is length, sure, as any show going that long will run into some fatigue issues, but there’s one core difference I think isn’t talked about enough.
The Walking Dead is effectively a superhero show. No one has superpowers, but it’s a superhero show all the same, pulled from the pages of a comic that features much, much larger than life characters surviving an impossible situation in very comic book-y ways."

This is interesting to me.
My opinion here is very questionable because I haven't even watched Season 2 yet so obviously am not watching Season 3 as it airs, so I know nothing lol, though the recent praise is kind of making me want to watch it.
I'm wondering if part of that feel is just about the running time though? I mean Walking Dead early seasons, I'd say were about people too. I don't know if it's just natural you get to a point in a show where bad guys have to beaten, that the characters have to become more and more invincible. Granted certain character moments on Walking Dead take that quite literally, but still, if characters are going to survive so many years of against the odds, surely they just naturally do end up becoming kind of superhero, no?
Is this the Gimple Season of Fear? Can you tell in its quality?

murph, the quality of the Fear story and writing has skyrocketed in season 3! I actually recommend it now. You don't need to have seen season 2, or even the start of season 3. Just tune in and enjoy some awesome, realistic ZA drama!

How the heck did Daniel escape that fire? How did he recover from burns without any visible scars? There are lots of "superhero" type things going on in FTWD. Just not as many and for not as long as TWD.

FTWD doesn't have a comic it has to be based on, and when SG has gone off-comic, we've gotten the prison flu, Grady, Glenn's dumpster death fakeout, and the Heapsters, so....

Something else I appreciate about Fear the Walking Dead - it actually has the walking dead! The walkers are an important feature of the story. They're a threat, and have to be dealt with in every episode.

I just checked and it's Season 4 he'll be coming on for as executive producer... This next year+ could be interesting lol.

I have been hearing great things about FTWD...slowly catching up on S2 ATM. The fuck is the point when Gimple will come ruin it next season

I mean, there's still a couple people technically of that role on Walking Dead that don't seem to actually be that influential/involved anymore. Maybe from a lesser role he could actually be better. He doesn't lack talent, he just lacks ultimate leadership talent.

I think he was brought on to "better" it but he'll do anything but that...

If he doesn't have free reign, he doesn't have free reign. I think it depends on how much his role on Fear will actually allow and what's behind the improvement of Season 3. If it's a new showrunner or a new group of writers - that quality should remain as long as they do.
