Netflix had an original series called Sense8. I'm sorry to say I had never heard of it, and I was told by two people I HAD to watch it who knew I really liked sci fi and horror. This is NOT a horror show, but more of a sci fi one. Fortunately, I was told I have to give it a few episodes as the first few episodes are very confusing. And boy were they! I'm so glad I was told this, I don't think I would have kept watching had I not been told that early on. I've gotten many friends and family hooked on this show, but it was only from me watching the first few episodes with them and explaining all.
Netflix recently cancelled this series after two seasons. The show was made by the Wachowski's, the team responsible for the Matrix. The writing on the show was great. It basically centered around 8 people located all throughout the world who were psychically connected. Yes, it is as cool as it sounds. Each of the 8 also had a separate story line where they were from(India, Kenya, Korea, Germany, Chicago, London, Mexico and San Francisco) As each of the people "communicated": with each other they would be with one of the other 8, or eventually all together. This means they literally flew the actors to other locations for filming. This resulted in the costs per episode being a staggering 9 million dollars per episode! I kid you not. I was surprised they did a season 2 when I heard that, and told everyone not to expect a season 3. I was told I was nuts cause the show was that good...and it was.....
What was so good about it? The sci fi part that always kept you guessing for me was very interesting. I must be honest and say I love action(stereotypical guy I know), and starting with the second half of season 1 the action really increased and it was awesome. I found the writing to be excellent and every one of the 8 leads I liked and was rooting for. Their separate story lines were all interesting as well. It was also the most inclusionary show I have ever seen..not only having people of all different ethnicities as leads, but also all different walks of life. One of the 8 was a transgendered male, now living life as a female lesbian(I swear). There was also a gay guy as one of the eight. The only thing they were missing that one person pointed out to me, which we they had in This is Us that people love, is all eight of the leads are good looking, thin people. No one of different sizes, but other then that the show is remarkably inclusionary. The show is insightful, everyone will find someone they can relate to, and it will make you think.
I do have two warnings for people interested in the show though which I highly recommend watching. First of all, I have already described the diversity this show has which is great. If you're very uncomfortable with any of that, this might not be for you. But along those same lines, especially season 1 there is blunt sexuality in the show including an orgy with all 8 mains. I didn't find it offensive at all, but be forewarned it will shock you a bit. Secondly, after watching season 2 you will be disappointed it's over. Seriously. It was that good.
If you give this show a shot, be patient in the first few episodes and know the wait is going to be worth it. It's confusing at first, and I still can't fully describe all to you even though I've seen it a few times. Everyone I know that watched the show loved it, and I got quite a few to watch it as well who echoed the same sentiments.
I know merelei liked this show alot too as she posted something on it when it was cancelled. A lot of people were upset and disappointed, but at 9 million an episode...we have to give credit to Netflix for green lighting this to begin with because there is no way they got enough new viewers to offset those costs.
