"Hope you all are digging these exclusive cast mini-Q&As done just for The Walking Dead subreddit. (Thanks again to Ross Marquand and Alanna Masterson for doing them.) This week, we are in the presence of royalty! Khary Payton — who is killing it this season as King Ezekiel — joins us to answer a few quick questions about what is going down at the Kingdom. Thanks to Khary, and to all of you for reading. —Dalton from EW
DALTON ROSS: There is currently nothing I love more in the world than hearing Ezekiel snap “Jerry!” How would you describe the relationship between those two?
KHARY PAYTON: Ezekiel is like the coach and Jerry is the star player that has trouble focusing. Coach loves him, but he has to use that tough love at times. Ezekiel wants Jerry to serve the same purpose that Shiva does. He wants him to exude this intimidating presence when representing the Kingdom. But instead of scowling and growling, Jerry throws out that big happy smile and a silly pun. He's not an actor. He can't pretend to be surly. That's part of why we love him though.
DALTON: So does Zeke have a crush on Carol or what? And can I call him Zeke, or does the king not take kindly to that?
KHARY: Yeah, I think he's got a little crush on her, and no. No, you can't call him Zeke.
DALTON: Norman Reedus told me he’s jealous of your tiger. What about Daryl Dixon makes YOU jealous?
KHARY: The crossbow, the motorcycle and fact that he's been on this show 6 seasons longer than me...:

He still feeding Carzekiel, I don't like his way of trying to get popularity. His character may be popular by himself without having to engage a romance with Carol.
I clarify: I'm not impartial, since I don't like Ezekiel even in the comic. And unfortunately Khary's statements regarding his relationship with Carol don't help

While I find the carzekiel stuff annoying, I do suppose I have to grant him this: his character has next to nothing else. He has had very limited screen time... and how much can he talk about a tiger. The lazy, easy way to garner attention for himself is to ride a popular character's coat tails. He's not the first, and I'm sure he won't be the last. The current Carol remark is pretty tame compared to the uber-trollish answer he gave after The Well.
And, if it's true? *shrug* So, Zeke gets crushes on traumatized women running from love. Ones he views as "a challenge" (also to borrow from KP). Guess that's his issue to deal with... And/or Gimple's since that frankly kind of gross.

But the fans are already taking into stalker territory and already are saying awful things about Carol "playing hard to get" because you know "no" doesn't really mean "no" right? Ugh. It's going to be a long hiatus. I actually do like Khary, but I will not be happy if they keep trolling a "love triangle". The ABC shippers are obnoxious enough. Not that I give them much mind anymore.

I wish the actors were given clear parameters about what to say in interviews and AMA situation. We don't yet know for sure whether Ezekiel has a real crush on Carol or if Peyton just thinks she does or feels it would win him some points with the fandom. We have already seen Jason Douglas, who plays Tobin, use the brief Carol connection from season 6 to further interest in his character this year. Actors must pay bills, sure, but they forget sometimes that fandom can take their comments as gold and canon (mistakenly) in the absence of canon clarity on the show. I like Ezekiel just fine and have nothing against Khary Peyton, who is entering the fandom this year for the first time and may still be learning how things work well vs not so well (think the fandom with Alexandra Breckenridge and her learning curve). He may know for a fact Ezekiel has a crush on Carol or this may only be his opinion- hopefully time will verify or debunk this if it is only his own headcanon at play. Carol is a lovely, strong vibrant woman admired by Rick, Morgan and others. Does it mean she automatically charms every man in her path? Not necessarily, nor more than every man meeting Michonne or Maggie is automatically infatuated with those characters as well.

Not necessarily, nor more than every man meeting Michonne or Maggie is automatically infatuated with those characters as well. I think you make a couple of really, important good points. I hate the PR handling (lack of) of the show. The cast have more PR moments than I think any other show cast does and yet are just left to figure shit out themselves. And, these are actors playing characters that they don't know where their own storylines are going. Gimple tells them jack shit, it seems. Also, your learning curve of the fandom point. It just doesn't bother me. He's asked a question about having a crush - he isn't the one suggesting it. "Yeah I think he's got a little crush on her" is hardly the most endorsing answer to any kind of "feelings" for someone, or aggressive trolling in a fandom that has kind of given a new definition to the concept. If he rambles on and on about it, if he's the one bringing it up and slotting into questions where it isn't asked, then I'll think differently. But look how much he talks about Jerry, and yet a single line about Carol. There's also the frank reality that again, he's asked about a crush, and if he says "No, I don't think Ezekiel would have a crush on Carol" it leads to a whole other group being offended and asking why the fuck wouldn't he have a crush on her. I just don't find most of what he's said committal enough to really mean much of anything other than reacting to interview questions in a friendly, fun kind of manner.

Many actors present opinion as fact and push ships that may never and dont ever set sail for their own popularity and benefit. EK and NR have been the worst offenders and by far most problematic, imo, but it seems to me that saying what you want (or what you think will garner a reaction) is pretty much par for the course for many of this show.
Anywho, KP says he "thinks" zeke likes Carol. There was a moment in ep 9 that made me think it could be actually true, but at the end of the day theres been nothing definitive by any stretch. KP offers no huge elaboration, no teasing of it playing out or being reciprocated. At the end of the day it seems pretty harmless.
I think his explanation of zekes dynamic with Jerry seems spot on.

I think in the future we will know what the intentions were persecuted by Khary. While I don't like this all talks and statements. This makes feeding hatered fandom.
Lately, it seems to me that someone wants to Caryl fandom go down.I'm not angry at his words, it's just sad I guess I just have a bad mood today, but every time I read a similar things it seems they give origin the idea in people's minds the idea of a love triangle and such nonsense. Most people would believe that there is an extra feelings between Carol and Ezekiel after reading media
I've already talked about origin of ideas in the minds of people through the media. People create something from scratch and enhance it to enormous size.
Tired . *sigh* :-/

Yawn to KP and his trolling. One week he is feeding shippers...the next week he is calling the same shippers delusional... then back to feeding them. I hate trolling, no matter if it vets like norman are a newbie like KP who has only appeared in a few episodes. These actors know what their trolling does to the fandom, but they don't care. All they care about is con lines and making their characters more relevant if their character is a newbie or a red shirt. But I think it's says volumes about Ezekiel standing as a character, if the guaranteed question in his interviews are about shipping... Even suppose Ezekiel fans have even made comments that Ezekiel’s role on the show is pointless if he doesn't have a hook up... Now I know Ezekiel does zero in the comics other than get a amazing death. But if you were a Ezekiel fan wouldn’t you want the character to be different to his comic counterpart. Also Jerry who is a red shirt seems to have made more of a impression with a few lines than Ezekiel has done with his waffling.
