EW "...So where is Daryl emotionally now that he has been reunited with his friends when things pick back up in the Feb. 12 midseason premiere? According to Norman Reedus, the dude is hella pissed off. And he’s ready to make some people pay. “He wants revenge,” says Reedus. “He’s ready to fight. When he goes back in that last episode and hands Rick back his stuff, it was like, ‘Let’s go! Let’s go beat this guy up. Let’s go take what’s ours and fight this monster.’ So, you know, he’s in kill mode.” Kill mode! The best of modes on this show, by far. It sounds like Daryl’s emotions after watching his friends bludgeoned with a baseball bat have progressed from grief to rage. “I feel like he spent his time in the hole thinking about Glenn and thinking about Abraham,” says Reedus. “He took it very personal, and felt like it was his fault and he was deserving what he was getting.” But no longer. “Now he’s ready to get revenge. He’s ready to go kill everybody.”... link

Of all the cast, NR's interviews are the ones I find the most disconnect with. I didn't get the sense Daryl was in "kill mode" when he saw Rick at Hilltop at all. he looked broken. I sometimes wonder if NR just has these headcanons about how his character is being portrayed, even though his acting isn't backing it up.

I do tend to take NR's interviews with a grain of salt. But if this is actually the case for longer than one episode, it may lend credence to the speculation of Daryl potentially going along with Richard's plan until he finds out who it's about.
I feel like Richard may use the "are you willing to do anything to protect your family and get back at Negan" kind of angle. Which may feed into Daryl's anger and thirst for revenge... and then totally deflate it when he sees where that could have led. His anger/beat down of Richard then becomes not only about Richard being a danger to Carol - but also anger at himself, where his need for revenge could have ended in more death for TF (bringing back the ideas of Michonne/Rosita/Glenn being captured because Daryl ran off to kill Dwight, and then Glenn being beaten as a punishment for wanting to kill Negan). Which possibly stops him from killing Richard. I think it could put them both in a very vulnerable/open place to have really honest conversations.

I really wish another journalist if you call call Dalton Ross a journalist was covering TWD for EW. This reads like all Norman interviews done by Dalton Ross.. (zzz) The show must have sent out memo time the cast to tell them to big up Negan is going down.. In 7b we won't see Negan fear anything from TF. TF won't even get any revenge on him. Negan will cause another death. Rick and Rosita will end up shot. Negan will walk out of 7b still being a cocky dick. The only change will be that TF will have more red shirts to take away screentime from main characters in season 8.

I sometimes wonder if NR just has these headcanons about how his character is being portrayed, even though his acting isn't backing it up. I'm wondering if maybe he's {Spoiler}talking about what we saw in the sneak peek for 7x09 where he seems willing to kill many innocents just so they can "win." I'm assuming he'll be that way throughout 7x09 and that it carries into 7x10, which could be when he cools his jets a little after the Richard ordeal and his conversation Carol (who is in the opposite of kill-mode). That said, he looked utterly broken and his "Kill-mode", for however long it lasts, is also simply a symptom of his brokenness. Edit: lol, Starlight , That was also the main impression I got from this interview. This has TPTB written all over it. They know everyone is fed up with Negan and want TF to get theirs... so they're getting everyone to promote TF "rising up" and whatnot. Pfft.
