I've been thinking about Carol (no surprise there) and what parts of herself did she see in Mary and Paula.
Mary, started out as part of a group that wanted to help people until they were attacked, raped, beaten and some killed. As a whole, the once "good people" turned and became "US" before "them". they left the signs up to lure people into their "sanctuary" and those people were given a choice. "Join them or feed them".
For Carol, who is at heart a very compassionate person, filled with a good heart and a willingness to do whatever she could for her "family", seeing what Mary had become after her own actions of killing Kavid to protect her family would have been horrifying IMO. Unlike Mary, carol's action (per MMB and just knowing WHO Carol is) were a mercy, if it had worked and the illness had been stopped, Carol would have still dealt with the guilt, but she would have also had the satisfaction of knowing her actions were not in vane.
I will say that killing two suffering people is not outside of who Carol is. As a compassionate person, ending their suffering would have been something I could see her doing and is an action I, myself, would have been capable of.
Paula... the dark version of Carol and a reflection of who Carol is most afraid of becoming. Cold, hard, no compassion. Someone with a single minded drive to survive at any cost.
The parallels between Carol and Paula were very clear: the loss of 3 girls, under the thumb of a man who had all the power in the relationship and the loss of self in that relationship ( Paula's boss vs Ed. while Paula's boss was not physically abusive or abusive in any way, he held the power in that relationship. Keeping her at the office when the zpoc started ect), having a "warm body" instead of a real meaningful relationship (Paula's "body" vs Tobin), there are other simularities but
her story about the three pots.
In one pot the carrot went in strong and came out soft.
In another pot he egg went in soft and came out hard.
In the last pot the coffee bean went in and changed the very water itself.
Paula and Mary both (in their own way) went into the water soft and came out hard, Carol was damn close to following that path.
Unlike Paula and Mary, there is something inherent to Carol alone that prevents her from losing her "Softness".
Carol turns her pain, grief and guilt inward instead of outward like Mary and Paula.
She tried to distance herself from those she was closest to, not wanting to kill but had no hesitation when it came to defending Maggie in same boat. "Do whatever you want to me, just don't hurt Maggie, don't hurt the baby"
When the Wolves attacked, she donned her bad ass warriors cloak and defended her new home.
When her family was held hostage by the termites, she waged a one woman campaign to save them.
She has always been there to support her family, pushing aside her own pain to do so.
To me personally, Carol is the poster child for selflessness.
so there's my bit, now its your turn.
What do you think Carol saw when she met Paula and Mary?
What fears do you think they brought forth for her?
How did meeting Mary and Paula affect her decisions?
