Many critics jumped onto the backs of The Walking Dead's creative team after the graphic season seven premiere. Many said it was too much to show on television, and that the gore wasn't acceptable. In an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com Walking Dead Insider Brandon Davis, Joshua Hoover - who plays Fat Joey on the show - explained that his death scene was actually much more graphic when they filmed it. According to Hoover, they cut out the scene where his head burst open. When Brandon asked if they held anything back Hoover replied, "Absolutely." The actor then went on to explain that they filmed an entire sequence that didn't make the final cut. "Yeah I took a hit. I took a hit on the head from Mr. Norman Reedus, and it was a good hit. Norman Reedus has swung a metal pipe before in his life I think," Hoover said. "Yeah I got hit right square in the head. There was the special effects that they do with the blood packet. They had a blood packet on the pipe and it just went everywhere. Everybody said it looked so awesome, but also pretty graphic. So i’m assuming that’s why they didn’t show that angle, they probably had a little too much already with Spencer’s guts. But, yeah, there was definitely another shot, and I’d like to see that footage." LinkVery, very interesting.

I think the preference was for the bad guys to do the most damage to someone to keep the tradition and not have a Team Family member go overboard with carnage in the MSF. It was already clear from the intensity of how Daryl beat Joey to death with the lead pipe (why do I always feel I am playing Clue every time I type that?)plus sometimes less is more. viewers got the message without all the extra blood spatter IMO.
I feel confident that the bloody two deaths were weighed before the network's standards and balanced with Spencer's more visual death and guts.

I can't believe I actually agree with less imagery. I'm sure the scene will be in the special features on the DVDs and I of course, will need to see it, but I think they made the right decision.
Joey really hasn't done anything to deserve that. He seems to just be trying to survive. I think getting graphic with a villain killing someone is completely different. I also think it would have been okay if it was someone really bad, that Daryl did that to. Less is more when it came to this specific scene.

It is interesting.. and agree it fits with the show always showing the villians doing more hideous acts... but I do think the backlash over the premiere did play apart in this to... Just like last year when the show added Dwight telling Daryl he was okay after shooting him. After the show got a tonne of backlash over the fakeout Glenn death.

I would like to believe they listened, but I don't think they can hear above the hum of their own hubris at this point, lol. I see their decision to keep the camera on Daryl as a way to keep the scene about him and his mental and emotional state rather than have the viewer feel any emotion/concern for Fat Joey.

I think they toned it down because a significant portion of the viewing audience put some blame on Daryl for Glenn's death. Daryl going full Negan on the hapless Joey might not be what they really wanted one of the show's heroes. The drop in ratings may be indicative of viewer weariness in graphic violence. I hope so. Some level of gore is expected but the turn to sadism this season may be a bridge too far. Negan enjoyed killing Glenn and Abraham.

I was shocked that TPTB did allow Daryl to kill Joey the way he did. Not that Daryl had a lot of options on the choice of weapons, and it did show Daryl's anger that had built up, not only for what they were doing to him as a prisoner but what they did to Glenn and Abe.
Plus Daryl knew that every person in Negan's compound would turn him in. It was kill or be killed.

I am not sure what to think on this one. We knew what was happening, what he was doing. We didn't need to see it. I suspect they just decided to tone it down for that reason and possible because of the Spencer scene.

Well it serves them not to. I think the lingering shot of Glenn's brains and blood gushing in the dirt was enough headshots to last for awhile. I mean, Dale's death was pretty nasty. But I watched and I was like that's effed up but it was needed. I don't mind gore and guts if the story is good. Which, I'm still trying to figure out the "good" story they are supposed to be telling.

MC is calling this article BS I'm more intrigued that MC still pays attention to TWD articles. Spoilers say that {Spoiler} Abe will be back on the final..And maybe he is hoping ghost Abe could come back making more ghost apperances to Eugene or Rosita down the line.
