Huge news, Star Trek fans: The first new Trek series in a decade has found its star.
Sonequa Martin-Green, well known to genre fans from her role on AMC’s mega-hit The Walking Dead, has been cast as the lead of Star Trek: Discovery, sources tell EW.
The casting ends meticulous search to find the ideal actress to anchor the eagerly anticipated new CBS All Access drama. Martin-Green will play a lieutenant commander on the Discovery. (CBS Television Studios had no comment).
Martin-Green is will continue to serve as a series regular on AMC’s zombie drama, where she has played the tough pragmatic survivor Sasha Williams since season 3.
The casting brings the 31-year-old Martin-Green back to the CBS family. She previously played Courtney Wells on The Good Wife (which is getting a spin-off series, titled The Good Fight, on All Access that debuts in February). She also played Tamara on ABC’s Once Upon a Time. Martin-Green’s husband, Kenric Green, is also an actor on TWD.
Martin-Green represents the first African-American woman to lead the cast of a Trek ensemble, fulfilling a years-long goal by the project’s original showrunner Bryan Fuller. The series will also have the TV franchise’s first openly gay character, a lieutenant played by Anthony Rapp.
“Star Trek started with a wonderful expression of diversity in its cast … we’re continuing that tradition,” Fuller noted to reporters in August. “We wanted to paint a picture of Starlet that’s indicative of encountering people who are much more different than we are.” While Fuller stepped down from his duties to focus on his upcoming series on Starz, American Gods, Discovery’s new showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts are moving forward with his original vision.
Another evolution from Trek tradition: Unlike the previous series in the franchise, the main protagonist of Discovery won’t be a captain (at least, not initially). Fuller described Martin-Green’s character as a “lieutenant commander with caveats.” “We’ve seen six series from the captain’s point of view,” he explained. “To see a character from a [new] perspective on the starship — one who has different dynamic relationships with a captain, with subordinates, it gave us richer context.”
The casting of Martin-Green fills the most crucial role in the series, which CBS will premiere in May on its All Access streaming service. Discovery has made a flurry of other castings in recent few weeks too. Michelle Yeoh will play Captain Georgiou, the Starfleet Captain aboard the Starship Shenzhou; Doug Jones (Hellboy, Falling Skies) will play Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer and a new alien species in the Star Trek universe; and Rapp (Rent, Road Trip) was cast as Lt. Stamets, an “astromycologist,” fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery.
The show also cast three actors as Klingons: Chris Obi (Roots) as T’Kuvma, a leader seeking to unite the Klingon houses; Shazad Latif (Penny Dreadful) who will play Kol, a Klingon Commanding Officer, and protege of T’Kuvma; and the newcomer Mary Chieffo as L’Rell, the Battle Deck Commander of a Klingon ship.
Trek is executive produced by Fuller, Berg and Harberts along with Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Akiva Goldsman, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.

This raises many questions since we have seen with Corey Hawkins and also Chad L Coleman how well or poorly it works for a main cast character to end up working n another show. Also Sarah Wayne Callies since she used the cover of a new main role, concurrent with her continuing on TWD in fact to hide that Lori had died on the show.
I do think Sasha will get the Holly comic death likely at the end of the season.

Welllll.... sh*t.
I mean, it's amazing for Sonequa (!!)... but.... being the lead main in another TV show, IMHO, means only one thing.....

I'm so conflicted by this. I'm so fucking happy for her. She will be incredible. And it's with Anthony Rapp! In yet another progressive, barrier breaking Star Trek take! This is like dream-worthy to me. But Sasha! Oh Sasha...

I love that SMG is moving on to better things and I will be definitely watching Star trek... But I'm pissed that Sasha will most likely be getting the predictable Holly death.. Now I have only one reason to watch TWD...

And Michelle Yeoh, so I am thrilled for her. Discovery was recently pushed back to debut in may rather than January 2017, so this would also explain some of SMG's absences from filming since presumably the pilot has already been filmed.
"Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Rapp and Doug Jones were announced as the 13-episode series' first castmembers. Chris Obi, Shazad Latif and Mary Chieffo were cast this week as Klingons. Star Trek: Discovery was originally scheduled to debut in January and was pushed back to May, with The Good Wife spinoff The Good Fight now set to be the first scripted offering on CBS All Access, the network's VOD platform"
So it is hard to tell what exactly, if anything has been filmed or whether SMG is going to have to spend all of her time before May filming ahead of debut.
I agree it doesn't seem to bode well for Sasha whom I have always liked and wanted some happiness for, finally. :-S

Well rats. Crap news for us but great news for Sonequa. This is a pretty high profile gig. This may be the biggest "get" for any of the Walking Dead alumni. So unless this is filming in Georgia, looks like it's curtains for Sasha.

I remember Tyler James Williams being announced fro Criminal Minds: Beyond Border when filming spoilers told us he hadn't been around a while, despite the announcement using the "will be able to handle both roles."

RIP Sasha Good for her though, I'll definitely watch her in this Star Trek show. Honestly, I'm pretty shocked. I predicted Sasha would get the Holly death at the start of this season, then I saw how much focus Rosita was getting and thought it shifted to her. I don't want to lose either actress, personally but I braced myself for it.

I'm reading conflicting things about this show. I've read that it will be filming in Toronto and that Bryan Fuller is no longer the showrunner. Also it will be on a service called CBS All-Access, which I'm assuming is an online network?

This is frustrating as hell because I love Sasha and feel like they barely even scratched the surface with her and now it seems she's on her way out?! We know what she's become (a completely badass sniper warrior with some of the best instincts inside TF!) but we never got to learn about who she "was", besides Tyrese's little sister and that she was a fire fighter before? Seriously, are they trying to eliminate half the cast by 7/16? Well, whether she is truly leaving or will be "working on both shows", I wish her the best and know she will do well! Damn Sasha?! :-[
OH, and while I realize I'll sound like a completely unenlightened dork by asking this, can someone do me a favor and post me a spoiler on what Holly's comic book death entails so I can know what to expect if it's pinned on Sasha? I don't read the comic and only hear certain bits and pieces from my brother who does! We've never talked about Holly though? Thanks.

urdeadtome I haven't read the comics, but my understanding is that Holly tries to take out Negan, fails and is captured. According to the walking dead wiki: Holly is later taken by The Saviors back to Alexandria, offering her back in exchange for Rick's cooperation. Unable to see, due to the bag on her head, Rick leads her back into the safe-zone with the sound of his voice. Denise runs over to Holly to remove the bag from her head, and it is revealed that Holly has reanimated, and precedes to bite Denise on her arm. Before the zombified Holly could cause any more harm to Denise, Rick manages to shoot her in the head.

Thanks for the info SC (I'm sure I could have taken my lazy ass over to the wiki page and read that myself..duh! : My brain is having a serious malfunction today!), that's pretty interesting stuff. That sounds exactly like what they did on FTWD when they took Jesse McCartney's character (the douche bag bad guy?) back to his bad guy big brother with the bag on his head and when they took the bag off he had turned and immediately took a chunk out of his brother's arm! Hmm, Kirkman must like using some of the same deaths from the gn in his new show as well?! Btw, your avitar is cracking me up! Shake that booty Santa!!

This is completely out of left field, but IF Sonequa were to get the Holly death, and no, that is not confirmed at this point, would she bite Scott instead, since Denise is dead and her husband, Kenric Martin-Green plays Scott? Both Sasha and Scott would be dead/put down and they could leave the show together rather than be split up as working actors on separate coasts trying to keep the marriage going and caring for their young son? Yeah, I know, the weird things that go through my mind at this time of the morning.

Is it possible, if indeed assumptions are correct (which they likely are, given how major this role seems), that Sasha actually gets a variant of Denise's death? I had this thought based on the similarity (and then ultimately major difference) vs Tyreese's death. Given that he had his arm cut off after a bite then died anyway, would it make sense maybe for Sasha, always different from her brother, to keep her arm intact and thus still be (relatively) able to fight? With Denise's death, she could also go out (relatively) peacefully and surrounded by family, as Bob did, or still staring down the enemy, as Abraham did. OTOH, the Michonne spoilers could point away from this as one would think Sasha would choose to keep an arm so as to be able still to make those sniper shots during a key battle and Michonne appears to have taken at least some aspect of the sniper story.
ETA: I'm not sure what to make of the very limited Sasha sightings for the finale. If she got Holly's death, the one definite spotting with Maggie and Jesus at Raleight Studio (suggesting Hilltop) is hard to explain unless they're burying her... But then that would not explain a rumoured presence (albeit for only one day) at the Gin.

As it's looking like SG decided to futher waste Sasha's character by giving her the predictable Holly death. I think Rosita should get Denise death now... in a redemption arc for her causing the death of Olivia and causing Eugene to be taken to Sanctuary.... Rosita arc all season seems to be her being 100 times more angry than usual.. She can help someone before she dies....

The Trekkie in me is excited as hell for her.
I really don't want to see Sasha go, though. Ha, maybe she will get the Comic Michonne storyline after all?? Maybe? I don't see how that fits though, if they even take that part of the comic Michonne trek that far.
My rambling aside, good for SMG. I hope this isn't the end for Sasha.

TSDF posted this today: **Season Finale Death**
Recently we have been hearing a lot of whispers about Sasha dying in the season 7 finale. We've been waiting for more confirmation before we shared what we heard. Well, by now I'm sure you've already seen the news about Sonequa's new lead role in Star Trek (You go girl!!). This is enough for us to believe the information we received about her death is accurate.
We heard multiple versions of how her death supposedly goes down. However, there's a common theme of Sasha sacrificing herself in a failed attempt to take out Negan. Once we feel more confident in which version actually plays out on the show we will provide those details.
In addition, we have also heard rumors that Michael Cudlitz was sneaky sneaky and actually came back to film scenes for the finale. We think they might be some kind of dream sequence or flashback that has something to do with Sasha's death scene.
We will miss you, Sasha. You have always been one hell of a warrior. 😔
