"...Unfortunately for those ‘shipping Jesus and Sasha (Sonequa Martin), the comic book equivalent of Payne’s character, Paul “Jesus” Monroe, is gay. It hasn’t been addressed on the show yet, but while talking with The Huffington Post during an AOL Build Series interview, Payne explained his thoughts on his character’s sexuality. When asked about the possibility of seeing that element of Jesus on screen, Payne said, “I think that would be amazing.” The actor recalled Kirkman’s former comments on the character, saying, “Yeah, who cares? He’s a badass and he happens to be gay.” “I think that’s one of the strongest things about Robert [Kirkman] and how he writes the comic books,” said Payne, continuing, “Why wouldn’t he be? And I see no reason why that would be different in the show.”..." link

I would have been shocked if Jesus wasn't gay on the show. Kirkman was right when he said Jesus being gay isn't a major plot, it is just part of who Jesus is. I really hope they introduce Alex, been waiting for that one.

I did like in Go Getters when he let Maggie and Sasha out of the closet. I can't wait (yes, I can) for the GA to find out Jesus is gay.

I'll be glad when audiences just accept any character's sexuality without any issues. I'm sure some GA folks will be sad, and others happy, as attractive as he is.

I'm looking forward to a time that a persons sexuality is no longer a news worthy item, when people/characters can just "be" who they are without all the fan fare. I'm also looking forward to a time when no one has to live in fear about "coming out". Maybe someday...

I never thought they'd make him anything but. I don't know any GA personally that would make a huge deal out of him being gay either, but I'm sure there will be some interesting reactions out there.

Not surprised people are shipping Jesus with Maggie and Sasha. The fandom doesn't care that both females just lost their partners...The characters are hot so that's all that is needed for a ship...
I don't think anyone will actually care that Jesus is gay on the show. We already have Aaron Eric and Tara.. But until the show canon him on the show as being gay. Fans will continue to ship him with female characters.

I don't find Jesus "hot", I think he's too cutesy and overblown. He's just kinda annoying to me.

But jesus hasn't made much of a impact yet and with it looking like Sasha may end up taking the second in command role with Maggie at Hilltop. I'm not sure what the show will do with Jesus.

I'm really quite grateful for how Jesus' coming out to the audience was done. No drama or theatrics, subtly mentioned to someone he is establishing a friendship with, but still given the moment and the acknowledgement that something important had been shared. I worried so much they would make it about someone else who had fuck all to do with Jesus. So I am very happy.
The creation of a badass Jesus who just so happens to be queer was always something I really liked about Kirkman. Something I actually wanted to celebrate him a little bit for.

I agree murph and am glad fans got the better reveal as also happened with Aaric. I think the show has learned from the experience of Tara and how that was discussed around the fandom and of course the extreme homophobia in the fandom aftweAaric. I am so happy Kirkman made many diverse characters in the comic we can all enjoy and celebrate for whomever they are.

I agree. I'm glad the scene was about Jesus and no one else. It was a big moment for his character, and thankfully it wasn't spoiled by making it about someone else.

I loved the scene because it was so subtle and just ordinary. Not all gay reveals have to be as dramatic as Aaron and Eric's, and it could be in the quiet moments, however rare they are on this show.

Perfect reveal, IMO. It's not often that TWD does anything so organically anymore. Thankfully this didn't feel forced in any way, very natural. They got this important scene just right, my favorite moment in the episode. I love that rainbow smiley, lol. Good job TP, LC and even AK. That's how it's done.

I agree we've missed many little moments this season, especially in 7-A and those are where the show can do some of it's best work IMO. Hard to get little moments when the focus is on thebig action scenes and people getting killed to lay down the story bones for 7-B.
We needed info and some backstory for Jesus badly. IM glad it was handled with grace and elegance, without making it the sole defining element of the character. Well done Angela Kang!

I agree it was a great reveal. For me, I just wish we would have gotten to know Jesus a bit more. I'm not sure it's so clear on the tv show that the guy is a "bad ass" especially since he is seen so infrequently. But i agree....that kind of a reveal is the way it should be done.

I'd like to know more about him still - how he found his way to Hilltop, what he did before the ZA- I think he was a marine in the comic- special forces maybe? Does he have a relationship now? Does he have friends out there somewhere? For now though, I am simply happy to know something.

I do want to know more about him, but I'm not totally upset about the lack of badass. I think we've seen how audience can react to such characters and it's not always good. I want him to be more than just that, and so far, I think he has been more. I would like him on screen more, but seeing him really confront the situation he's been in at Hilltop and Gregory and seeing him being affected by this new group of people he's met and him wanting to reach out and help - I've really enjoyed seeing that. I wouldn't take ninja scenes over that. I don't think they'll let go of the badass fighter stuff, at all, so if he can be established as a feeling human being first, and then layer on the ninja aspects - I'm really good with that. I will say though that I think his ninja moments so far have shown him to extremely competent in the least. So so far, I'm okay with it - it just depends on where it goes from here.
