Ripley and I were talking about this the other day: In Consumed, Carol says to Daryl, "It's like you were a kid. Now, you're a man."
In season 4A, we learn that Daryl took on more of a leadership role at the prison. Not only feeding the growing prison population but actively rescuing survivors from near certain death. He also was a valued member of the council. His actions here are extremely man-like or more appropriately the actions of an adult. In 4B, unlike his peers: Rick, Michonne, Carol, and Tyreese who took their duties as caretakers of children seriously, we see him following around a teen in search of moonshine, manhandling said teen, and subsequently burning down a perfectly good shelter in the middle of the woods. These were not the actions of an adult, but of someone who lacks maturity and to some extent character. Of course, adults don't always make the right decisions, and can often display immature qualities *coughmecough* but what we saw, at least in 4B, doesn't match up with Carol's statement. And yes, she has no idea of what transpired between Daryl and Beth, but we do. What exactly were the writers trying to tell us about Daryl through Carol? Is it that Carol has the wrong read on Daryl? Or did the writers forget they had to/should have found a way to reconcile the Daryl they gave us in 4B with the words Carol would say in 5A?

Carol didn't know about 4b..but she saw the aftermath of it and Daryl working to get Beth back. He was walking her talk in 5a. Then I don't know what happened.
I do believe that when people are on this road of coming back from abuse and trauma, the recovery period is not always smooth sailing...it is fraught with forward steps and back steps... and I think that is what Daryl is showing.

murph : Sexual Chocolate, as far as what the show was trying to say, I think it was just a highly ironic (given that consumed was the last time Daryl acted like an adult, IMO) reinforcement of the shows perception of daryls greatness and development. They love to "tell" rather than "show" progress with these characters, and this was just another example of that. The thing is though, carol had reason to believe that statement based on the way he was being there for her, and despite the terrible dip in basic decency and intelligence we saw in 4b, as a viewer I did as well. After that episode....not so much.

Daryl's "development" since Consumed has been very disappointing. Carol's comment to Daryl, I thought, was meant to foreshadow his maturing going forward. The writers, however, decided to scrap that and continue his endless cycles of manpain.

Unfortunately, I'm scared the cycle will continue and I'm already questioning which character will be his source of manpain next.

Of course we're only in ep 11 of filming. Plenty of time to develop a shallow bond with a redshirt over the course of 2 episodes and kill them off for another round of tears.

I think 4a was about showing who Daryl could be. And 4b was about knocking the character down. 4b was suppose go give us insight into who Daryl was. But the Daryl arc in 4b was a failure on every level.Due to crappy writing and awful acting. Then in 5a it looked like Daryl was back on track getting development. Then 5b happened. And Daryl was knocked back down again. I think the stalling on Daryl's development is the same as Carol's. SG wanted a certain story to happened Morgan's return. And as a he didn't get that story when he wanted it. He stalled the development of certain characters. Giving the characters repeative arcs. Daryl got the friendships that went no where. And Carol got a non- stop misery arc. I suspect the arc between {Spoiler} Daryl and Negan. Will finally give Daryl development. Were he will finally learns that his actions have conquences. Daryl will be at a all time low when he is kidnapped by Negan. He will have lots of time to time about everything.
