The discussion re: NR and GN's new restaurant left me thinking we needed a space specifically for the discussion of burgers because they're awesome when done right.
What's your favourite patty? Your choice of bun (or not)? What are your favourite toppings? What's your favourite place... be it gourmet, fast food/chain, or greasy spoon/mom and pop? Any special gourmet burgers you absolutely love? And, given unlimited options (and the most amazing metabolism ever), what would be your side of choice (hint: the correct answer is sweet potato fries with chipotle aioli)?
Share your burger love here!

Now this is my kind of discussion. I'm a burger whore and living in LA I have a lot of hipster/gourmet burger joints to choose from, although there's nothing wrong with a good greasy spoon. Lately, I've been enjoying the Pork Adobo Burger from The OiNKSTER. Pork Patty served on a Pan De Sal Bun with House Made Pork Adobo, Garlic Aioli, and Pico de Gallo. It's delicious but rich as hell so I can't eat it all in one sitting. As for favorite toppings: I love extra pickles, raw onions, and ketchup. And I mean LOVE.

My little brother makes the best black bean burgers, but refuses to give me the recipe. I've made numerous attempts over the years to replicate it myself, but never come close. He won't share because he's mean and cruel. And also b/c it's an incentive to get us to visit, lol. It's tough to find a good veggie burger while dining out. If it's on a menu, I'll go for a grilled portobello anytime. With the works.

I've had a few great burgers here in the mountains, but prefer to make my own. I use the suggested America's Test Kitchen blend I grind, potato, brioche or classic hamburger rolls. a nice sear in the outside, cooked medium rare, always a good start.

I love love love plain burgers - I'm real simple - mustard, ketchup, a slice of Vidalia onion and numerous dill pickle slices.
Five Guys make a great fresh burger and their fries are delish!
The best bun IMO is a Ciabatta roll or Ciabatta bread.

This thread title made me laugh. I'm pretty boring when it comes to burgers. No cheese, and just lettuce, pickles (sometimes, some places have shitty ones) ketchup and mustard.
Aside from a few locals, I like JL Beers, Smashburger, and Five Guys as far as burger joints go.

I also like Red Robin and Burger 21. Two other great places with very different tastes!

We don't have any of those places where I live sadly. Just a few great Mom and Pop places like French Fryz or BBQ shacks/joints like Harry's & Piggys which also has burgers, hot dogs and fresh ice cream made in small batches . Slaw on burgers is fantastic MorganBGone!

Living in Cali I'd be remiss without at least mentioning In N Out. Regular or animal style delicious.

I've always wanted to Try In N Out, but I've had people tell me that Smashburger is very similiar.
I have a really long layover in LAX in a few months, part of me is seriously considering trying to find an In N Out Burger near by. lol

The Smashburger near me closed a while back :-[ . The burgers were truly great!
Slaw - I love love love it on Pulled Pork and Chicken/Turkey/Veggie Burgers. Have not tried slaw on a regular burger. My favorite slaw is the Carolina Slaw I can get at Earth Fare (which makes sense as the headquarters is NC). The Carolina Slaw contains Collard ribbons. Yummo!

The owner of Earthfare is a neighbor of mine lol. He has a corporate apartment here for the butchers who rotate between locations in NC and TN. Slaw is great on BBQ and is a huge part of the NC BBQ tradition, regardless of which sauce [Eastern- vinegar, Western-tomato , Lexington style or Charlotte-SC style ( with mustard) ] you prefer.

I must be the only slaw hater. I've never had a slaw I enjoyed, and I restaurants attempt to besmirch my pulled pork sandwiches with them.

Slaw is very polarizing I think-my brother feels exactly as you do dark sister. A regional burger in the U.S. Is very good- the Juicy Lucy. Sounds weird maybe but tastes better than it sounds. "A Jucy Lucy [sic] or Juicy Lucy is a cheeseburger that has the cheese inside the meat patty instead of on top, resulting in a melted core of cheese within the patty. Two bars in Minneapolis claim to be the inventor of the burger, though other bars and restaurants have created their own interpretations on the style. The burger is prepared by putting cheese between two patties of meat, then sealing both patties around the cheese to create a single patty with a cheese core. As the burger cooks, the cheese inside melts. This has the effect of keeping the meat near the center of the burger very juicy. It also separates the cheese from the bun, resulting in a slightly different texture than the average cheeseburger. Normal burger toppings such as condiments, onions and pickles can also be added.[1] Juicy Kucy info link

Since we're talking regional, Ripley, I'll throw the most amazingly tasty artery-clogging bit of Manitoban goodness into the mix: the fat boy. I'm sure it must exist elsewhere by a different name, but googling "fat boy burger" seems to be yielding a single province. The fat boy in its unmodified form is comprised of a beef patty (though more patties can be added), with cheese, shredded (always shredded!) lettuce, tomato, dill pickle slices (or even spears), onion, mayo, mustard, and chili (with no beans). Here's an example: (No photo could ever do the fat boy justice. You really need to have it dripping all over your hands as you try in vain to hold it together to appreciate it fully in all its deliciously messy glory.)

That looks delicious and a must try should I ever find myself up there! This topic inspired me to get burger fixings from the grocery store yesterday to try and create a different burger for the holiday.

This morning a close friend and I slipped into SC and headed for Strawberry Hill USA, which has wonderful fruit and veg. I bought a half-bushel of yellow freestone " Fancy Lady" peaches plus a gallon of large juicy blackberries for (yup) more jam. We go every July 4th weekend for the local blackberries which will start showing up in farmer's markets here next week. Peaches and berries were picked this morning although I'm waiting a few days on the peaches. JamapalloozaIIa III starts tomorrow. We hit a BBQ shack on the way home but I opted for a bacon burger with the basics. My friend laughed at me taking the photo for this thread. Also had homemade blackberry ice cream.

Lol this thread is amazing.
My favourite burger will always be Pljeskavica. It's THE Serbian burger and it's fucking huge, so it's recommended to hit the gym the morning of a Serb BBQ. The patty itself is a mixture pork, beef and lamb and it goes in a lepinja (you can just use a pita pocket). The condiments are ajvar (roasted pepper relish), kajmak (milk cream) and urnebes (spicy cheese) topped with onions and pickles.

I've cut back on eating beef and burgers but had one last night with caramelized onions, mushrooms and shredded lettuce.
