variety.com/2016/film/news/wicked-movie-release-date-1201797004/“Wicked” will finally take flight in 2019. The long-awaited “Wicked” movie adaptation will be released on Dec. 20, 2019, Universal announced on Thursday. Stephen Daldry is directing and Marc Platt is producing the big-screen take on the hit Broadway musical and bestselling book. Both are also producing the long-running stage show. “Wicked” is produced on Broadway by Platt, Universal Stage Productions, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone. The original Broadway production about the untold story of the witches of Oz starred Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. The show — now in its 13th year — has won three Tonys. It’s the 10th longest-running Broadway play of all time and has grossed more than $1 billion at the box office. The play is an alternative telling of the 1939 classic movie “The Wizard of Oz,” which was based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 story of the same name.

Samantha Barks needs to play Elphaba in this. I've thought that ever since hearing her sing Defying Gravity. I actually think she's better than Idina. (Singing starts at 1:17)

since I live in the middle of nowhere, I will never be able to see the stage production of Wicked. I loved the book and am looking forward to seeing the movie version
