I'm not sure if I'm the one one enjoying Penny Dreadful, now starting s 3. It is delightful, well written and cast.
This season Dr Jekyl joins the show as Dr. Frankenstein's friend, Wes Studi appears to help Ethan Chambler, vampires return while Vanessa Ives starts therapy with psychiatrist or alienist ( in that era) Dr Seward. The premiere is available via Showtine in-demand.

Wait! Did I miss the S3 premiere?! Ripley, you and I are on the same page about most things so it doesn't surprise me that you love this show too! I looove Penny Dreadful and think it is amazing all the way around. I was thinking that it didn't start back until May, am I wrong? If so I need to get caught up!

I found it last night and just watched it this morning! I am so excited for this season, it looks sooo good! We get Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde and Dracula and I am so thrilled that Patti LuPone has joined the cast, I love her and she was so good last season as Vanessa's "mentor". There have to be more folks than just the two of us that are PD fans here, I'm assuming that they just haven't seen the thread yet? If not, people are seriously missing out on an outstanding show. Does the writing blow you away as much as it does me?! I seriously sit and watch this show and am completely captivated by the writing, the performances and the set decoration (or whatever you call it), it's amazing! Shannon is forever giving me a hard time because it seems like the majority of the shows I get involved with tend to be so "dark and ominous" and full of gore and people are constantly dying, but those are always the shows with the compelling stories and the characters that you care for and that's what attracts me (plus the fact that I have always enjoyed the scary, creepy and dramatic genres!), he just sees me watching stuff that's dark and awful at times and he'll sit there and go, "what is wrong with you? Does somebody have to be doing something awful on a show for you to like it?!" As they say, opposites attract, but then his idea of interesting is watching car shows, golf and "American Pickers" (which I like too, but I would rather have my fingernails pulled out one by one than watch golf all day!!)I do have him watching "Vikings" regularly with me and have been for a couple of years now but that's about as "dark" as he goes. He only watches TWD here and there with me but of course is completely caught up on what's happening at all times because, well, he has no choice if he wants to remain part of my world! Anyway, I certainly hope more will join us here as PD progresses? I just think it's one of the most well rounded shows to come along in years.

I'm sorry I'm just getting to this, I've been away a couple of days, but yes, I was totally shocked that the show ended on Sunday night with the finale! Of course we've all wondered just how long Vanessa would suffer with this albatross that she carried with her and be tortured over and over by it but I honestly did not see it coming, not really even with Ethan walked in the room with her at the end and there was this overwhelming sense of hopelessness, I still thought he would profess his eternal love to her and talk her into running away to some far away land, but she was right, no matter where they went or what she did, she could never escape the evil forces, they would follow her forever. I'm really sad that the show has ended because I have been an avid fan from the beginning and have always felt like it was so beautifully done and the writing and acting were amazing; just extraordinary performances by the actors, particularly Eva Green. But I do understand now that it's been a few days that this is really the only way they could have done it, properly. The show couldn't (shouldn't) go on without Vanessa's character and while there might have been several options to "resurrect" her character for a fourth season or more, the issues would still remain and so I (sort of) understand their decision to wrap everyone's stories and have her go out in a beautiful way, in the arms of the man she loved. I'm still accepting this and it will leave a void for a while because it's going to be damn near impossible to find another show that's on the same level for me.

It was a good show, well acted. Sorry to see it go too, but not surprised. Everything is a distant second to Game of Thrones for me nowadays it seems, but there are few shows I have enjoyed.
