I'm not too happy about this. Not only did Stephen King ruin the ending of the Dark Tower series, but now the screen adaptation is already off to a terrible start. I like both actors but having the racial swap is just ridiculous. Roland was inspired by Clint Eastwood.
While Roland Deschain takes his name and purpose from his kindred spirit in Browning’s poem, Clint Eastwood’s performance as director Sergio Leone’s spaghetti Western character “The Man With No Name” influenced the character’s look and mannerisms. The Stephen King character even winks at the comparison in Song of Susannah, telling Roland, “As The Man With No Name—a fantasy version of Clint Eastwood—you were okay. A lot of fun to partner up with.”
And the interaction between a white Roland and Odetta (a racist anti-white person from the 60's), which is a major dynamic between the two characters, is now pointless.
As with all "racial" swaps of characters, it is usually politically motivated for the interest of political correctness. Rarely is the character swapped from black to white, nor from woman to man. It's nearly always the other way around and this pattern of casting choices has increased substantially lately.
You wouldn't make Black Panther or Cyborg white, and there is no reason to make Jimmy Olsen black. When Todd Mcfarlane made Terry Fitzgerald (from Spawn) white on the movie because he didn't want the movie to be a "black" movie, there was backlash over it. And rightly so. Stop changing things to suit an agenda.
How would people feel if they made Superman gay in the new Batman v Superman film? It's the same thing. Changing something for no other reason than to brainwash people with agendas.
If I were black, I would be pissed that they can't bring actual real black characters to the screen but instead have to "sub in" black people for white roles.

spectre, I understand what you are saying and while I mostly agree, I'm going to reserve complete judgement until the project gets some critical review. Sometimes his novels don't translate well in films/TV ie "Under the Dome". Then there is "The Stand", "Stand by Me", "Green Mile", and "Shawshank Redemption" which make up for the 'duds'. SK is my favorite author and I read all of his work - and if he wrote a book on bird watching for instance, I'd be first in line to read it. : I liked him when he wrote under the influence of cocaine and alcohol and I like when he writes stone cold sober. That said, I liked the first few books in the DT series the best. His son, Joe Hill, is an amazing author as is his wife, Tabitha King. More casting news: www.slashfilm.com/tom-taylor-dark-tower/

rosie - I agree, the first 4 books of Dark Tower are amazing. Then, he waited too long to finish it, wrote himself into the story and just lost his way on it. Have you read Locke and Key by Joe HIll? It's a comic and a very good one at that.

Oh, you are going to love Locke and Key. I recommend picking up the Hardcovers. They are very nice to add to a collection. NOS4A2 sounds interesting.

This looks epic! Stephen King story, with Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey! Can I start camping out in line right now?

"Focusing on fans of the series, I asked King what long-time readers of The Dark Tower will be looking forward to in the film. “I think they’re going to trip to the idea of doors between worlds. There’s little things here that really make your eyes open. In the film, Jake goes through a hole between worlds – in the movie, it’s a hole between two worlds – the house on Dutch Hill is where it happens. In the movie itself, he throws through a sneaker, and it goes from New York city and lands in a desert.” King elaborated, “That’s’ what I love about fantasy – the way the real world is right next to this world of make believe where there are monsters and Thinnys and all kinds of crazy stuff going on. I absolutely love that.”
Me too!
Btw, that teaser trailer for It scared the crap out of me! The red balloon floating by gave me (bleep)ing chills.

Much better than I thought based on the critic's reviews!
Yes, it was all over the place but I enjoyed it.
Idris Elba and Tom Taylor who played Jake Chambers were very good.
Matthew McConaughey was believable as Walter.
