"...voters with emails trumpeting their releases from the past year so that the prestigious pictures are on everyone’s mind as they fill out their ballots. Warner Bros. unveiled their 2015 site today, with information about campaigns for Black Mass and Mad Max: Fury Road proudly plastered on the front page. (Warner Bros. releases Magic Mike XXL and passes that up for Best Picture and Channing Tatum for Best Actor? In a year this thin with candidates? He could stand a real chance. But this is all neither here nor there.) As much as the words “Fury Road for Best Picture of the Year” may lift the hairs on the back of our necks, it’s important to have a little context. It’s good news that Warner Bros. has confirmed their intentions to support a run for the Oscar down Fury Road, but that’s far from a guarantee of anything. Studios with enough money to mount big fancy campaigns get behind any picture they think stands a snowball’s chance at securing a nomination. Exhibit A, from Paramount’s 2014 promotional site..." link

In case I'm not the only movie awards season junkie here - let's talk about the Oscars!
They released their short list for the Best Visual Effects award today -
Ant-Man
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Bridge of Spies
Chappie
Everest
Ex Machina
Furious 7
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2
In the Heart of the Sea
Jupiter Ascending
Jurassic World
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation
The Revenant
Spectre
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Terminator Genisys
Tomorrowland
The Walk
I love a lot of these, mainly Age of Ultron, The Walk, Ex Machina, The Martian and Mad Max. I'm sure The Revenant (the bear is CGI) and The Force Awakens will be solid contenders too.

I just saw Room which was amazing, there's definitely going to be Oscar nominations generating from that film.
The big issue this year is a few of the people being campaigned in the supporting race are actually lead performers and that isn't fair.

I read the book when it first came out. Such an uplifting story even though the mother suffered so much abuse.

TWD Zone Site Admin & Owner Prepare to cry in Room. It's a two hour movie and I'm not even exaggerating when I say I cried for about an hour of it. I was even having an internal pep talk, like "you didn't cry in the books, why are you crying now?" I was done. Ripley I want to see Carol so badly! I just checked out The Price of Salt (the book it's based on) from the library.

The 88th annual awards won’t be handed out until Feb. 28, but before we get to hear “And the Oscar goes to…” and Chris Rock’s opening monologue we need to know which movies, actors, and filmmakers will be up for the awards on Hollywood’s biggest night.

I'm so pissed Paul Dano, Michael Shannon, and Jacob Tremblay didn't make it into the Supporting Actor category. Also that Age of Ultron didn't get a visual effects nomination that it really deserves. Other than that, I like these nominees. This year hasn't been the greatest for films, but the few that are great are all mostly here.

The Danish Girl is overrated. Alicia Vikander is very good in it and the costumes are beautiful, but that one, like The Hateful Eight and Carol were severely underwhelming for me.
I still hope Spotlight takes Best Picture. I think they're leaning towards The Big Short, but if Spotlight wins the BAFTA they'll get some momentum.

This is hilarious dark sister thanks for a great laugh! I agree he has talent, but I have not felt he has really deserved an Oscar for many films. I have not seen The Revenant I admit, and perhaps I am just missing something? it has been ages since one of his roles really moved me thought.

www.cleveland.com/moviebuff/index.ssf/2016/02/oscars_2016_why_the_academy_aw.htmlOscars 2016: Why the Academy Awards matter, and why they don't Interesting snippet: "When you talk to some of the members about what they've watched and haven't watched, it's very interesting," the Oscar voter told Musto. "They don't see everything."
Then, explaining why he won't vote for Sylvester Stallone for Best Supporting Actor, the voter said, "He's a pig.... I can't stand Sly as a person."
In 2013, Scott Feinberg of the Hollywood Reporter got the same sorts of answers when he interviewed an anonymous director about his Oscar votes. Here's one choice quote, about Tommy Lee Jones, who was nominated that year for Best Supporting Actor for "Lincoln": "Tommy Lee Jones has been such a bitter guy -- all that scowling at the Golden Globes? I'm telling you, people don't like the guy."
As for Jennifer Lawrence, nominated that year for Best Supporting Actress for "Silver Linings Playbook": "Jennifer Lawrence I was on the fence about, but she lost me with that 'Saturday Night Live' bit; I thought it was mean-spirited and shows a lack of maturity on her part."

It's always been a popularity contest.
Combine these stats with how few actually watch all the nominated films, of course the "best" don't necessarily win.
