There are so many good ones, my top three most memorable are probably
4x9 After - when Michonne goes back to kill Hershel's Head
5x1 - the slaughterhouse trough at Terminus - it was one of the most horrific and creepy feeling scenes. I don't think they have been able to top that.
Carol's Flashback episode once Rick Banished her was pretty powerful too, with the "Leave me alone" line and the soundtrack was fitting.

Great question! I will forever love 3X1. Everyone is more hardened and desperate and life on the road was obviously no piece of cake.
Lori- pregnant as hell Carol- much less timid and now wiry Glenn- no longer the shy pizza boy
Everyone had a job to do and knew exactly where they fit in the puzzle. And the coup de grace: Carl opening the can of dog food while everyone looks on practically drooling in hunger and here comes Officer Friendly to blow up their dinner party. Brilliant.

Still thinking about my top three, but 18 miles out comes to mind. The flash forward of Shane running from walkers and penning himself in the school bus really had me on edge. I will think about two more.

My favorite cold open was the first one.
But let me digress. The first episode I watched of TWD was The Killer Within. I knew about the show because I follow news about Prison Break actors. I read SWC was pregnant and about to deliver so I though I'd finally start watching. Well .... that was a heck of an episode. I was sad but totally sucked in the show.
Next day, I went to the Library - got Season 1 and 2 and binge watched them both (I didn't have NetFlix at the time). Then I caught up on the Season 4 episodes that preceded The Killer Within.
The Season 1 scene in the cold open showing Rick driving with his walkie talkie and running into the bunny slipper walker girl was unbelievable. From that day, even though I went about watching the series in the wrong order, I was in it hook line and sinker!
The terminus cold open After, still gives me the chills.
The cold open in What Happened and What is Going On was beautifully done.
Others of you will mention their favs and I'll think "Oh yeah I loved that one too"!

rosie - I used to watch Prison Break; I hear they might make a return. Man talk about getting spoiled on a show when you start it off with a character death. lol nana 18 miles out was a good one too. I was trying to find that one on youtube to post but didn't see it.

OK. THIS is my all-time favorite cold open... EVERYTHING was perfect.. the music, the cinematography, the writing...I need to go back and watch it again.. it was so powerful.
The opening to Better Angels still plays in my mind today... standing round Dale's grave while Rick gives his eulogy...they cut to the scene of the group going out in the truck to kill walkers.. I still see the look on Andrea's face and the camera following beside the truck and then eventually turning off.. there was the famous Daryl looking at Carol moment...the group beating the walker in the field and taking all their frustration out on it...
#2 I Know What's Happening and What's Going On... the entire episode was haunting and amazing... they got it right.
Still working on #3... images from some will always stay with me... the cold open after Rick banishes Carol...he drives by the dogs eating a walker ...
The cold open in Consumed...Carol screaming at the walker and it following her with that halted gait.the camera lingering on it. Some of the moments in this show are so amazing....

Great topic spectre! So many wonderful cold opens to weigh here: my favorites are 3.1, Shane in the bathroom and recently, Heads Up with the return of Glenn.

Oh yeah, the Shane Head Shave scene was pretty epic. And we even got a call back later with Rick shaving the beard.
6x3 was pretty good too, with Rick out of breath running from the Walkers, yelling "Open the Gate!"

Was Rick chasing down Bob 2.0 a cold open? If yes, that was badass as hell. I'm talking about the scene where he's on foot and slices a walker practically in half. All you hear is the rapid tap tap tap of his boots as he gives his best imitation of Usain Bolt. If not a cold open it's still one of my favorite scenes of the entire series.

Yep, and that's when we got the scene from the comics when he hit Martinez with the RV, only it was a Police Car vs Bob

People gave Rick shit for killing Lansom but I was with him 100%. Unpopular opinion: I think he enjoyed that kill and I don't fault him for it. Jesus, I think I'm too far gone.
Another I love is the cold open for The Grove. The opening shot of the kettle on the stove, the music (Maybe by The Ink Spots), the camera panning from one kitchen window to the next, revealing a little girl playing catch me if you can with a walker. Her giggles mixing with the high shrill of the water coming to a full boil.
I give Gimple and his team a lot of shit and much of it deserved, imo, but when they do things rights, man do they hit it out of the ballpark.

My favourite opening is tell it to the frogs On first watch I thought it was very well acted and powerful on second watch when he rolled in on himself saying he knew he was bad and needed to be punished all I saw was a young Merle Dixon at the hands of his dad It gets me every time
