I want to see this series.
I think I will wait till all 8 episodes air - my cable provider has free promotions for its premium channels. I can watch it during one of the freebies.
I read the book - gotta see how Season 1 plays out.

I have never read the books so I'm going blind into thus show. My first impression is that it's very stylish, dark and shot beautifully. The actors are good especially Ian Mc'Shane as Wednesday. And I like Ricky Whittle as Shadow the man is hot and has come along way since his days on a British soap. And I wasn't expecting the sex scene to end the way it did.

Wild and thought-provoking, a rare combination! I can't wait for the next episode! Completely unpredictable, I have no idea what's going to happen, which is very refreshing. While I like Westworld, I find American Gods less, idk, sterile. It's more organic, grittier, more human. Outstanding acting and production values.
Gizmodo's Evan Narcisse has an excellent recap of the first episode:
io9.gizmodo.com/the-first-episode-of-american-gods-demands-offerings-of-1794809001
Favorite line of the ep was Audrey saying, "I am trying to get my dignity back, here!"

How is Shadow going to escape Czernobog's hammer?
I love this article from Gizmodo's Katharine Trendacosta:
io9.gizmodo.com/american-gods-is-spoiler-proof-television-1794754495
"American Gods is less interested in being mysterious and more interested in examining its characters and the themes of belief and identity. It’s not straying that far from the original. “I read the book and then I watched show, I was like, ‘It’s a lot how I imagined,’” said Kristin Chenoweth, who plays Easter. There are changes—mostly expansions to give characters more time and backstory—but the core of the show is the book. And the beauty of the show is how it interprets it. You can’t spoil that, you just have to watch them do it.
The glory is in seeing the interpretation, not obsessing over every little plot detail. “This is fanfiction,” says Orlando Jones, who plays Mr. Nancy. “I get insane about that idea. I can’t believe that Neil Gaiman, Bryan Fuller, and Michael Green are writing American Gods fanfiction together. That shit is off the chain.”
American Gods is too good in its execution to need secrecy. It only needs to be seen, and nothing can spoil that."

It's not as good as the book. But it is interesting, and I will continue to watch it.
So far I like the actors chosen for the characters.

One thing you can say about this show is there isn't another show like it on TV at the moment.
I really liked Orlando Jones performace as Mr Nancy in the beginning of the episode.
Love the Shadow and Mr Wednesday scenes together.
Liked introduction of Czernobog and the sister.
The only thing I wasn't a fan of was Gillian Anderson as Lucille Ball.

The only character I'm already tired of is Bilquis. I could just see it now... "What will I be doing in this show?" "Well, you'll be a naked woman on top of other naked people, flopping your boobs up and down." "No, seriously, what is my role?" "Ummm....that's about it."

This latest episode was the most normal episode, until half way and then the usual American Gods stuff happened. The sequence with Laura taking out the men in the field was awesome.
I liked it gave insight and a backstory to laura and her relationship with shadow. My favourite part of the episode was the scene between Laura and her best friend in the bathroom.
And I really like Emily Browning as Laura moon. The casting on this show is always spot on. ( well I didn't like Gillian Anderson as Lucille ball.)

I think Audrey is my favorite character. We were all laughing so hard during her scenes with Laura. My daughter and I were trying to fill my son in on the background of the story, and when we got to Bilquis, we both just stared at each other and then finally she looked at my son and said, "She eats people with her vagina." I'm definitely enjoying it. It reminds me a bit of Preacher. But more so.

Did anyone else get the Field of Dreams vibe when Laura walked out of the cornstalks onto the field of men in identical outfits? Or the Nightmare Before Christmas vibe when Laura was trying to sew her arm back on? Ok, maybe it's just me.

Superb episode. Somehow, AG keeps surpassing itself. The wait between eps is excrutiating! Some of the highlights for me: Crispin Glover as Mr. World. Great acting. Gillian Anderson as David Bowie (Ziggy era?), and her "kiss", as Marilyn Monroe, to Techno Boy. lmao Pablo Schreiber as Mad Sweeney is an absolute joy. "You're an asshole, dead wife!"

This was the first episode I didn't really like. I loved the opening, I thought it was beauifully done.I liked the Laura and Shadow stuff and Mad Sweeney. What I didn't like again was Gillan Anderson doing her impersonations of David bowie and Marilyn Monroe. The same way I didn't like her as Lucille Ball either.

The Mad Sweeney/Laura/Salim road trip was funny. I still don't understand who Mr. Wood is. (Mr. Wood....must....resist....cheap....joke)

reckon agree I loved the scenes involving Mad, Laura and Salim. The stuff between Mad and Laura is just. And Shadow's reaction to Mr Wednesday killing Vulcan is usually my reaction to certain scenes in this series.

"When you’re a screen legend like Ian McShane, you kind of think you’ve seen it all. Then showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green come along with a blood-soaked vision of Neil Gaiman’s mind-bending fantasy novel “American Gods” to remind you there are always new corners to turn. The 74-year-old actor spoke to Variety about tackling one of those eponymous deities in Starz’ bold new series, sharing the screen with fellow Manchester native Ricky Whittle and that proposed “Deadwood” feature film that has many western fans waiting with bated breath. So, uh, you don’t see this kind of thing on TV too often. [Laughs.] It is quite a show. That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to do it and I’m even more responsive to it after seeing it. It went better than I thought it ever would. It’s quite right too. I mean, if you’re going to make a show called “American Gods” you might as well go for it, you know? But I must say, when you’re making a show it’s always difficult to guess. Along those lines, I was wondering how your vision of it when you read the book and the scripts differed from what you eventually saw on screen. It’s such an execution-dependent show. Finding the tone is always important for a show which combines sort of the big questions in life with humor and animation and religion and a background to immigration, coming to America. It starts up as a road movie, a buddy/buddy movie between me and Shadow Moon, the excellent Mr. Ricky Whittle. But it goes into other areas. I mean when I read the book after they offered me the part I thought if they get a third of this on the screen that will be something, and they’ve got much more than that. I think that’s due to the ingenuity of Bryan and Michael. I’d never worked with Bryan. Bryan has that extra “va-voom” in terms of television showrunners. He has a vision and he goes for it. And I’ve worked with Michael, who fully has his own version of how things should be. I did a show called “Kings,” which was a show set in the future, what if America was a kingdom — so Michael has his own ideas about America and I think they’re both brilliant in their own way and they combined well on this..." variety.com/2017/tv/in-contention/ian-mcshane-american-gods-deadwood-movie-1202459350/

Episode 7 was my favorite so far! Kaila Hale-Stern, of themarysue.com, agrees:
www.themarysue.com/american-gods-episode-7/#disqus_thread
"Browning continues to show her considerable range and skill at playing multifaceted characters, and she has found an ideal acting partner in Pablo Schreiber. Their chemistry has long been excellent, and they proved this anew by continuing to spark off of one another even when playing different characters, or in Schreiber’s case, a Mad Sweeney at a very different point in his “life.” We find out a lot about Sweeney—that he began as an ancient king, is still wracked with guilt for fleeing a battle, and was reduced through changing beliefs to a “mere” leprechaun. The evolving nature of belief and traditions through time was a poignant theme this episode.
In the present-day side of the episode, Laura and Sweeney have forged a cautious alliance that is no longer completely caustic. The sheer joy of watching them interact made me wish that their roadtrip could continue of for many more episodes. But alas, we are close to the season’s end. We know that next week will see Wednesday trying to recruit Kristin Chenoweth’s Easter, and considering that it was a white rabbit that caused Laura and Sweeney’s ice cream truck accident, all roads seem to lead to her.
Speaking of that accident—as if we needed any further proof, A Prayer for Mad Sweeney firmly established American Gods as the most gorgeous and finely executed show on television. Who else could make a van flipping over into poetry, and every frame of Essie’s story a painting? You could watch this show with the sound off and still be riveted—but I wouldn’t recommend it, since the music is so much an involved part of the narrative. The doo-wop songs juxtaposed over Essie’s colonial America-era story somehow worked perfectly."
I squeed when I saw Fionnula Flanagan!

OMG and I can understand why!! The revelation that Wednesday was the one who wanted Laura dead to get to Shadow was one I wasn't entirely surprised on, but the fact that they articulated that in the way they did was great! The revelation that Wednesday was Odin wasn't too surprising.
You know I always thought that the Evil Tree and Fire Bull were the Real Enemies of the show that the old and new gods had to team up to defeat, but it makes TOTAL sense for Shadow to have premonitions of what Easter/Ostara did at the end of the episode! Brilliant! I always thought that the tree was Yggdrasil and it was pissed that it was forgotten like that one on the Baring Strait.
