Is anyone watching Insecure besides Ripley and myself? Issa Rae, creator of the Awkward Black Girl series has a new show on HBO. The pilot episode was fun and it has Ripley singing the pussy song. What's the pussy song? Watch the show to find out.

I laughed through the pilot, which is well worth seeing-I'll be watching the entire season. She captures quite well many of the issues affecting career & personal life including friendship issues) and learning. The song is hilarious and is one I think with which single women can relate.

I just watched this show last night and I thought it was hysterical! (You two guys pretty much have the same kind sense of humor I do so this doesn't surprise me in the least!) But yeah, I'm planning to keep up with it, I thought it was great.
I also watched the first episode of "Divorce" with Sarah Jessica Parker and I thought while it was a little depressing, especially for someone who's been married over 20 years and can relate to the highs and lows that you can experience as your relationship evolves and changes in that amount of time together, but I thought it was pretty amusing overall! Some of the lines are just crazy funny, so I'm planning on keeping up with that one too. Check it out and see what you think?!

Glad you like Insecure urdeadtome! I watched the Divorce pilot but it appealed less to me. I'll watch a few more episodes before I decide to continue or nope out.

I love Issa and Molly's friendship since it reminds me so much of what me and my best friend Allie were like in our 20s.

www.avclub.com/tvclub/insecure-isnt-here-tell-you-whats-fleek-243928?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=SocialMarketing&utm_campaign=Subvert:1:AVTVClub"Insecure isn’t here to tell you what’s “on fleek”" "Out of all the web series making their TV debut this year, I was the most excited for Awkward Black Girl’s transition to HBO’s Insecure. Awkward Black Girl succeeded at combining the most personal moments of being a black woman with humor. Yet there was always something a bit imperfect and, well, awkward about the narrative. In its pilot, Insecure stays true to the moments that made Awkward Black Girl great, but presents a polished, well-crafted episode that shows Issa Rae’s growth as a writer and actress. “Insecure as Fuck” also puts to rest any concerns that the move to HBO would take the focus of the show off of black female experiences. Insecure is black as hell, funny as hell and feels like the black female friendship-centered show we’ve been waiting for. Insecure’s pilot focuses on disappointment. On Issa’s birthday, she wonders if her relationship is actually what she wants and deserves. Her best friend Molly is tired of dating and being told that she needs to settle for less. This is a common thread throughout the episode––not only are black women expected to settle for less; they should be accustomed to it. When Issa addresses a group of students in the opening scene, they assume she’s single because she doesn’t attempt to fit mainstream beauty norms. She has a short, natural afro and her outfit is more aligned with Echo Park hipsters than urban chicness. One girl shares her dad’s remark, “Ain’t nobody checking for bitter ass black women anymore.” Insecure knows exactly what narrative audiences assume they’re going to see when they tune into a show focused on black women and it’s asking us not to settle for that anymore...." Last night's episode was okay but not as good as the pilot. I have met kids who have been 10 miles from the ocean and have never been so I liked that they acknowledged that reality. And when Issa asked Lawrence for his rite aide card I almost peed myself. I like a good discount too, Issa. lol

And when Issa asked Lawrence for his rite aide card I almost peed myself. I like a good discount too, Issa. lol I think my favorite line last night was "we are not going to be those people arguing in Rite Aid" I loved the issue about taking the kids to the ocean and not just doing some well-intentioned, yet failure sort of thing which pays service to the many ways in which white people misidentify the needs of the groups Issa works with. I loved her strutting into the office in her great power suit, getting up to present and taking on that personae. I still like the pilot best so far but found myself glad they didn't settle the boyfriend- relationship issue in one episode. Lawrence thinking about things, feeling he blew her birthday and then trying to make it up to her despite what the other man advised about bitches was a sweet moment - I was thrilled they built in some character development fo rhim too..

I loved tonight's episode although it felt kinda short. I loved the friend Kelly at the party who was excited about the open bar and had a lot to say about LA men vs NYC men.

“I knew I wanted a soundtrack that would feel like it could be the soundtrack to somebody’s life. I wanted female rappers. I love raunchy rap, that’s something that I grew up on. I just wanted that to be reflected in this show. Our current show runner, he was a huge hip-hop head and Malina our director comes from a world of music videos so music was extremely important to her and she’s the reason we got Solange as our music consultant.”

New York Times "...When I first read that passage, I remember feeling a mix of confusion and anger. Black women are so often told that having even basic desires is asking for too much. Shouldn’t a woman as multifaceted, beautiful and accomplished as Molly have high standards? But in the wake of her decision to break up with Jared, Molly’s standards have taken on a different resonance. The writers aren’t necessarily critiquing Molly about her checklist for a partner. They’re illuminating how the images we have of ourselves and the fantasy lives we turn to can ruin the unexpected ways love can manifest in real life. Molly is stuck on a fantasy that no man can fulfill. She’s so eager to make it a reality that she expects commitment after just a few dates. She yearns so deeply for a solid relationship that she can’t even enjoy getting to know someone. Is it really surprising that her date is put off by the edge in her voice when she asks why he didn’t text her after a work event the night before — on their third date? This week’s episode is all about how the dreams we’re so desperate to make into reality can put a stranglehold on our lives. Perhaps that’s why, for all its humor, it had an undercurrent of intense, even melancholy yearning..." link

I don't think she's wrong in wanting both, but I do think she's misguided in not giving ole' boy at least a few more dates since they hit it off so well.

I agree Sexual Chocolate , it is confusing when the person you are drawn to doesn't meet the mental list in your head. Molly has so much to offer as a strong successful woman, so finding a partner whose strengths balance and compliment hers, with similar values is going to be a tough job.

One thing I am enjoying seeing in Insecure is how Issa's coworkers are constantly surprised and her ranking with them increases with each episode as stereotypes are blown.
In the episode about going to the beach, they are concerned it will fail but they all admire her at the end and she goes for a drink.
Then last night when it was clear he valued her and her co-worker found him attractive and sexy, again we see Issa's estimation by the students and co-workers go up a bit. She isn;t who they assume she is in so many ways. I love it.

Me too- it just dogpiled on her despite her good efforts and her recognition that it was a mistake with Daniel. And Molly, poor Molly, too little and too late.

I was glad Molly came around and "heard" the hard truths about herself so was able to be the friend Issa needed.I didn't realize until last night that Neil Brown Jr., who played had Vato Guillermo in s 1 of TWD, plays Chad on Insecure.

Aslo, as much as I love Issa and Lawrence both, I just don't feel they work together, as much as I have tried to fight that feeling since the pilot. I think she needs someone more like Daniel, who can help her be creative and support her artistic journeys as well as her advocacy work.It was a mistake for her since she was in a relationship already, but these things happen plus she and Daniel have a long history of attraction and knowing each other. He values her creative instincts and her current work. He's not as dependable as she would like maybe but they could balance each other out.
Lawrence, I feel, would be better with someone like the bank teller (although I hate typing that out) who encourages him to take the risks to get his app done, while working his day job. I really hate saying it and I keep yelling no! in my head whenever I think it, but it isn't going away. he made some poor choicers in the finale, but of course, when hearts are hurting in these situations, it is easy to do.
Both Issa and Lawrence are facing the uncomfortable challenge of having to take some risks and not being able to stay in a safe, secure, works halftime relationship IMO. But I will be watching season 1 again and again to put my finger on the pusles of their relationship.
Once thing I love abouu Insecure is that it captures, perfectly, the messy, head vs heart choices we all make in life, but shows the consequences too, which many shows gloss over. This show is real and I wish so many other shows had it's raw honestly and depth of exploration, even when it is painful for the characters and viewers.

"Insecure’s Issa Rae has one thing to be confident about this morning: her Golden Globe nomination. And, just like her character on the show, she shared her big moment with her on-screen bestie, Yvonne Orji. Following the Golden Globes announcement, Orji posted a series of FaceTime screenshots from a lively early-morning conversation she had with the series co-creator and lead actress, whom the Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy category Monday morning. In the photos, Rae looks ecstatic, grinning wide and throwing her head back as a grinning Orji looks on. “That time @issarae got nominated for a @goldenglobes and I FaceTimed her at the butt-crack of dawn and went through all the emotions of pure excitement in our matching headscarves!” Orji, who plays Molly on the HBO comedy, captioned her photo." www.ew.com/article/2016/12/12/insecure-issa-rae-golden-globe-nod-facetimeI'm thrilled for the cast and Issa Rae!
